About the Author
Peter Elbow is Professor of English and Director of the writing program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In 2001, he received the James R. Squire Award from the National Council of Teachers of English "for his transforming influence and lasting intellectual contribution to the English Profession."

Probably Elbow's best book yet!

Probably Elbow's best book yet. This is a superb book reconciling the often conflicting dimensions of the writing process--public vs. private, high-stakes vs. low-stakes writing, freewriting vs. crafted writing, etc.--so much so that it has virtually eliminated my 15-year-old case of writer's block. Despite its scholarly appearance, this is a supremely *practical* book on the writing process, that attempts to lower the stakes and make writing accessible to all of us, while simultaneously cultivating the ground for excellent writing and thinking. Highly recommended!

Peter Elbow should be in every composition teacher's library!

Whenever a teacher starts wondering why we have become such a "standardized" nation, he or she should just go back to Peter Elbow's theory of writing. I am using his fundamental theory in my own work and building on it in my my dissertation. Elbow is relatable. He claims that he was never the "best writer" out there and actually had to learn the craft. I love his honesty and humility and common sense approach to teaching composition. This is a must read for all teachers of composition.

This is a great and accessible book about writing. Good for the professional and layman. Peter Elbow discusses his attitudes toward writing and teaching. Excellent book!
