a terrific resource

This book is deceptively skinny but it is packed full of really useful directions for drafting your own 1930's style dresses. When I first opened the package I thought, "Oh it's just a skinny book, perhaps I over paid."
But after a careful read I fell in love with this little treasure. I have been working on teaching myself pattern drafting and own several drafting books. this books just makes it easy to figure out what to do ( and to extrapolate for other styles)
I am currently making myself a dress based on directions from this book. It's a pleasure to use.
I would buy this book even if you were not particularly interested in 1930's fashions because the directions are just that good and that clear.

Demystifying 30s dress construction

One of the things I love about 30s fashions is how they employ yokes, flares, panels, and pleats to flatter the figure. This complex construction yields deceptively simple lines with timeless sophistication.
The complexity of 30s construction makes it very difficult to replicate 30s styles using commercial patterns because fit is imperative. I find it very difficult to figure out how to make alterations where my measurements differ radically from the so-called norm.
This book shows how to create your own 30s patterns, based on your own measurements. Interestingly, the preface calls the methods presented "Scientific Dressmaking" -- and I can see why. The instructions take your measurements, then proceed step by step for each pattern. While I haven't had a chance to use the instructions yet, they appear to be straightforward and simple to follow.

Good book for basic styles

This book has some excellent basic 30s dress styles (including a beautiful long hanging formal dress) and some skirts and different collar designs. The first few chapters describe in detail how to construct your own block and how to use the block in constructing tailored clothing from the patterns.
Great book, probably best for the intermediate sewer.
