About the Author

Brad Schoenfeld, PhD, CSCS, CSPS, FNSCA, is widely regarded as one of the leading strength and fitness experts in the United States. The 2011 NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year is a lifetime drug-free bodybuilder who has won numerous natural bodybuilding titles, including the All-Natural Physique and Power Conference (ANPPC) Tri-State Naturals and USA Mixed Pairs crowns. As a personal trainer, Schoenfeld has worked with numerous elite-level physique athletes, including many top pros. Also, he was elected to the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Board of Directors in 2012.

Schoenfeld is the author of multiple consumer-oriented fitness books, including The M.A.X. Muscle Plan and Strong and Sculpted (formerly Sculpting Her Body Perfect). He is a regular columnist for Muscular Development magazine, has been published or featured in virtually every major fitness magazine (including Muscle and Fitness, MuscleMag, Ironman, Oxygen, and Shape), and has appeared on hundreds of television shows and radio programs across the United States.

Schoenfeld earned his PhD in health promotion and wellness at Rocky Mountain University, where his research focused on elucidating the mechanisms of muscle hypertrophy and their application to resistance training. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers and serves on the editorial advisory boards for several journals, including the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. He is an assistant professor of exercise science at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York, and heads their human performance laboratory.

Great book!

This is an excellent book! I have a small library and several health and fitness books. I learned new information from this book. It is a little on the academic side, which I like because I am a bio-geek. Summarizes several studies. Probably the most informative book on muscle development that I have ever read. Looking forward to reading future books from Brad Schoenfeld.

Interesting Read

John Twelve Hawks’ “Against Authority – Freedom and the Rise of The Surveillance States” Essay is a wonderfully crafted, easy to digest manuscript on privacy, technology, corruption, surveillance, data-mining, and the contrast between Power and Authority.

Hawks smartly combines information from numerous, credible sources with philosophy in a non-threatening, inquisitive and conversation manner to elicit the reader to see his position and pause to reflect.

Having read Hawks’ dystopian fiction previously, allow me to make two broad statements:
1. This is not a manifesto from a tin-foil hat wearing, off-the-grid living, mental patient-in-waiting writer hiding behind a moniker.
2. You learn that he does live on the grid and finds it impossible to lead an effective and efficient life with comfort without a presence in the Digital Market.

In my opinion, the Essay’s intent is to show evidence and information about the downside of giving away freedom in the name of protection (against terrorists, crooks, etc.). Hawks’ deftly provides statistics on prevention, or the illusion thereof. Additionally, the act of giving away privacy in the name of convenience is well presented throughout this essay.

Inevitably, Hawks admits that living off-the-grid is more of a fantasy: We work; we have cell phones and Internet, bills to pay, and places to go. He counters, however, that after reading his essay, you may become more aware of invasive technology and perhaps take time for yourself off-line with just you and your original thoughts to keep you company. You can start by leaving cell phones in the car when you and your family go out to eat. Unplug!

Having read the author’s trilogy “The Fourth Realm” years ago, I will say that aspects have stuck with me and this essay just reconfirms a portion of my thoughts and action. I am a strong advocate for attempting to control what search engines will find out about your true identity.

No, I’m not in the tin-foil camp. My DNA is already on file (Military service), I’m educated, and have a wonderful family. I’m on the grid, believe me.

However, I notice. I care. I minimize my public self and don’t expose my friends or family (as much as I can control). My monikers I use for public opinions published online do not tie back to my public-facing profile. That said, I’m not a computer whiz, so perhaps they are! It is the active action, or attempt of prevention at least, that counts.

This is Hawks’ end message. Don’t passively allow every action, purchase, location, picture, etc., to be scooped up by big data firms that sell your information, target advertise, and begin to use predictive analysis on your thoughts AND emotions.

Like you, I enjoy the convenience of the Digital Era. Just be aware of what is out there, how you can be profiled now and in the future, and how those with Power (not necessarily Authority) can shape your life.

I read this August 2014- I may revisit it next year to see if it resonates more, or less, than the original reading.

Should be Required Reading

Haven't read it entirely yet, but this is a much more succinct and non-fictional version of the arguments against government surveillance (oriiginally?) put forth in Twelve Hawks' novels.
I'd say this is a must read for anyone who cares about privacy or liberty in the 21st century.

The author takes a deep look into all the data-collecting and surveillance taking place in our lives and world. Once a person understands how much privacy has been lost, he can never feel at ease again. It is an OUTRAGE and the author has done a good job of making people aware. Everyone should read this book and become educated.

A Bridge between Worldviews

Over the past couple decades a quiet conceptual revolution has been taking place in various academic outposts around the world. As someone who has been away from academia for more than thirty years, I find this new multi-disciplinary way of thinking about natural resources, complexity, and the human future, to be highly exhilarating--even to the point of generating hope. This new Second Edition of Sacred Ecology brings into focus the author's own lifetime of work while also highlighting that of like-minded colleagues, many of whom Berkes has collaborated with over the years, together turning out dozens of books and learned articles, all in some way concerned with sustainability. To give an idea of the book's scope, here is a list of Berkes' academic interests (found in his curriculum vitae online). All find play in the book:

--Traditional ecological knowledge
--Co-management
--Community based resource management
--Sustainable development, northern Canada
--Sustainable development, international
--Human ecology and conservation
--Ecology of living resources
--Small scale fisheries

Many of the points covered in the book are complex (including complexity theory itself), but Berkes avoids the high levels of abstraction and convoluted prose common to academic writing. Here is a quote to give a sense of the book. "Adaptive Management is a good match for traditional ecological knowledge, and a potential bridge between Western and indigenous ways of knowing in the areas of ecology and resource management. It is part of the holistic tradition in Western science, not the mainstream tradition, but significant nonetheless. This holistic tradition includes systems theory, gestalt psychology, quantum physics, and ecology (Capra, 1996). Systems theory is often equated with complex adaptive systems. Fuzzy logic (not mentioned by Capra) may also be added to the list. Many of these holistic sciences are potentially suitable to provide frameworks for integrating Western and indigenous knowledge." (p 269-70).

Sacred Ecology offers a possible way out of the resource pickle we find ourselves in today, by constructing a bridge between our own failed reductuinist paradigm and one that has proven itself over time.

textbook for Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)

I did a lot of work trying to find a comprehensive introduction to TEK and this surpassed all of my expectations. Berkes is incredible. This book is pricy, but absolutely worth it. A must for anyone who even thinks they are interested in TEK, LEK, IK, etc.

Insightful, Helpful

From time to time, I've run into a stranger who simply strikes me as a person of importance, without them even saying a word. Why is it that a few people are like that, and most aren't? And, closer to home, how can I develop that sort of charisma? This question has puzzled me for years.
