About the Author
Kee Peng Ng BSc, PhD, MBBS, DTM&H, is a professor and senior clinical consultant with the Department of Medical Microbiology, University Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia. He has a special interest in diagnostic mycology and is currently conducting whole genome characterizations and pathogenomic studies on important members of the dematiaceous fungal species. Tuck Soon Soo Hoo, PhD, is a mycologist who retired after 40 years as a lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. He has extensive experience in the study of fungi of clinical importance, specializing in morphological identification and histopathological diagnosis of fungal diseases. Shiang Ling Na is a medical laboratory technologist in the Mycology laboratory, Department of Medical Microbiology, University Malaya Medical Centre.

AMORES PROHIBIDOS (Diario de un hombre) - 1ª Parte, fue su primera novela en publicarse en papel por la Editorial Chiado en Noviembre de 2013. En Agosto de 2014 se integra en la asociación literaria Colección LCDE y publica bajo este sello la versión digital. Poco después, en Septiembre, publicó tanto en papel como en ebook AMORES PROHIBIDOS (Diario de un hombre) – 2ª parte, con el que pone fin a esta bilogía. El 20 de Diciembre de 2014 organizó el I ERA (I Encuentro de Novela Romántica Ciudad de Alicante) que se celebró en el Auditorio del Centro Imaginalia de esa ciudad, con la participación de 12 autores y 2 foros literarios, y cuya madrina fue Arlette Geneve, finalista del premio Planeta 2008 y autora de 17 novelas. Un certamen en el que las artes escénicas también estuvieron presentes mediante en el espacio “La Romántica a escena” con una actuación teatral y otra de danza contemporánea. En noviembre de 2015 ha organizado el II ERA, en esta ocasión en el Centro Cultural las Cigarreras, un evento en el que participan un total de 24 autores procedentes de diversas ciudades de España, certamen en el que presenta su tercera novela: Atrapada en Venecia, una historia romántica llena de intriga y suspense y que se apoya en una gran trabajo de investigación histórica.

Romance, historia y arte perfectamente balanceadas!

Dicen que la literatura es la representación del arte plasmada en letras, de hecho, una de las funciones de la lectura es culturizar, dejarnos algún aprendizaje de vida o intelectual, y por supuesto, entretener y llevarnos a viajar en nuestra imaginación gracias a las hermosas que podemos leer hoy en día.

Hace unos días tuve la oportunidad de leer un libro que tiene un poco de todo lo que les acabo de explicar: "Atrapada en Venecia" de Leo Mazzola. Un historia romántica en la que el que aprendemos de todo un poco, en el que nos topamos con personajes reales, llenos de miedos, confusiones y equivocaciones, combinados con una enseñanza de lo que es el mundo que se esconde detrás de la hermosa Venecia. Un mundo que muchos desconocen porque es una parte histórica de esa hermosa ciudad, pero que gracias a este libro, podrán descubrir.

Una historia compleja, interesante, donde viviremos la forma en que muchas veces el miedo, la desconfianza, el orgullo, el pasado, las mañas experiencias y los prejuicios, nos hacen tomar decisiones u acciones que no son ,o más conveniente pero que, al final de todo, se presentan en nuestras vidas para darnos una lección de aprendizaje, aunque esta requiera que tengamos que sufrir y pasarla mal en un par de momentos.

Atrapada en Venecia es de esos libros donde se nota el trabajo de investigación que ha hecho el autor sobre historia, arte, Venecia y sus secretos, es un libro para aprender mucho y a la par vivir junto a nuestra protagonista Lara una historia llena de amor, desamor, amistad, superación.
Lara es una chica que no ha tenido mucha suerte en el amor y por eso se va a vivir con Irene su mejor amiga, su vida dará un giro, y tendrá que asumir la responsabilidad que conlleva vivir sola e independiente. Allí conoce a Carlos y se le abrirá una nueva puerta para el amor.
Me han gustado mucho los personajes aunque a veces me desesperaba con Lara, personas con sus miedos, defectos, virtudes, con sus equivocaciones y arrepentimientos, con sus prejuicios y orgulloso.
El orgullo te aleja de lo que realmente quieres por no dar tu brazo a torcer, eliges otro camino y a base de caídas, desengaños, dolor, aprendes la lección y cambias tu forma de ser.
En fin Atrapada en Venecia es una novela que me ha gustado y enseñado mucho, con ese toque de intriga y suspenso que te mantiene pegada a las páginas, a la par que conoces los secretos de Venecia y los lugares que el escritor nos va describiendo, más la historia de Lara , Carlos, David e Irene.

As Richard Freeborn wrote in 1994, 'Turgenev's comedy has often been called Chekhovian, even though it preceded Chekhov's mature work by more than forty years'. A Poor Gentleman (1840s) was a two-act play whose themes were compared to the works of Nikolai Gogol, a writer that Turgenev greatly admired and was influenced by. It was for writing an obituary for Gogol that Turgenev found himself arrested and imprisoned for a month, having managed to publish the obituary despite its being banned by the censor.

Born in Orel in central Russia in 1818 Ivan Turgenev studied at the universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Berlin and worked briefly for the civil service before turning to writing. He wrote several novels that examined the social, political and philosophical issues of the time as well as many plays and short stories. Living mainly in Baden-Baden and Paris Turgenev was acquainted with a variety of influential writers and met Dickens and Trollope among others on his travels to England. He was widely perceived to be the first major Russian writer to achieve great success in Europe. Turgenev died in Paris in 1883. The subtitle of Richard Garnett's biography (reissued in Faber Finds) of his grandmother, Constance Garnett (1861-1946) is A Heroic Life. It couldn't be more apt. She remains the most prolific English translator of Russian literature: twelve volumes of Dostoevsky, five of Gogol, six of Herzen (his complete My Past and Thoughts), seventeen of Tchehov (her spelling), five of Tolstoy, eleven of Turgenev and so on. Many of these will be appearing in Faber Finds. In all she translated over sixty works. It is not, however, the sheer quantity that is to be celebrated, though that in itself is remarkable, it is more the enduring quality of her work. Of course there have been critics - translation is a peculiarly controversial subject, but there have been many more admirers. Tolstoy himself praised her. Of her Turgenev translations, Joseph Conrad said 'Turgeniev (sic) for me is Constance Garnett and Constance Garnett is Turgeniev'. Katherine Mansfield declared the lives of her generation of writers were transformed by Constance Garnett's translations, and H. E. Bates went so far as to say that modern English Literature itself could not have been what it is without her translations. This extraordinary achievement was accomplished despite poor health and poor eyesight, the latter being ruined by her labours on War and Peace ,a tragic if fitting sacrifice; hers indeed was A Heroic Life.

About the Author
Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore in September 1878. His father moved the family to New York City in 1888. Although his own family was extremely poor, he spent periods of time living with his wealthy grandparents. He later argued that witnessing these extremes turned him into a socialist. Sinclair funded his college education by writing stories for newspapers and magazines. Sinclair s first novel was published in 1901. Sinclair was extremely active in socialist politics throughout his life. His novel "Dragon s Teeth" (1942) on the rise of Nazism won him the Pulitzer Prize. By the time Upton Sinclair died in 1968, he had published more than ninety books.

How He Spent His Vacation

Hal Warner is a college man who visits the coal camps of Colorado to learn what they are really like. He finds out how a traveler can be arrested and robbed of his money and watch. When he makes a friend he learns about the fear that oppresses workers in a company town. A complainer can be fired and blacklisted in the whole state. Death and crippling injuries are too common, the mine bosses ignore the state laws. Education in public schools offers a view of a wider world. Otherwise the people in these camps are like medieval serfs without their many holidays and benefits. Sinclair shows his bias against drinking, as if that was the cause of the worker's poverty instead of the result. The company preacher in the company church spoke against demon rum, but not the poverty and oppression they endured. Over-work caused "industrial drinking".

Miners were cheated on the amount of coal they produced. There was a caste system based on nationality. [Divide et impera?] The company supervisors tried to prostitute young women. Any accident is blamed on the victim. Hal gets a better job by paying off the boss. Hard physical labor dulled the mind and wearied the body. Workers were encouraged to spy on each other. An organizer for the United Mine-Workers shows up and explains why the workers need a union: to enforce the state laws that are ignored by the company bosses. In Book II Sinclair tells of the care needed to organize so the miners can get an honest weight for their coal. There had been a big strike once. The local government and state militia acted for the mine owners. Strike leaders were put in jail without being charged. Others were railroaded and left in a desert without food or water. Judges were forbidden to act! The strike was broken.

Hal learns how the votes are counted by the coal company: their man always wins! The miners decide on what to do, and how to handle the expected violence (rely on moral force). The company concocts a reason to put Hal in jail. The marshal tells Hal how the courts and jury are rigged to railroad him to prison, perfectly legal. But Hal has a surprise for the marshal. A mine explosion occurs. Sinclair describes the effects it has below and above ground. These accidents result when the company disregards the safety laws. The mine company is slow to rescue the men; there is a profit motive there (as in Cherry Illinois)! Hal is then railroaded out of town.

This fast-paced story tells about the political system that is corrupted by big corporations. Hal acts as a knight who passes many tests and difficulties to save the imperiled miners. Can people depend on the "old-school tie" to make everything right? Sinclair's writing skills have improved since "The Jungle" of 1906. This book describes life in a company town a century ago. Have things changed since? Will this past return? Sinclair is no longer totally in favor of alcohol prohibition. The 'Postscript' explains this story is based on the facts observed in unorganized mining camps around the time of the great coal strike of 1913-1914. The characters are based on real persons, every incident is typical. The Colorado strike was well documented. A report by the Colorado Supreme Court told about the political repression used to control voting. [Sinclair was a jounalist who documented his findings in novels. This prevented them from being long forgotten like most of the 'muckrakers' in the early 1900s.]

King Coal

I found this book to be a truly captivating representation of the hypocrisy and oppression that the early 20th century coal miners encountered. While the plot is not as notable as his earlier work, The Jungle; King Coal is laced with it's own gruesome depiction of the corruption caused by greed and apathetic treatment toward the mine workers.

Upton Sinclair devoted his life to exposing the flaws of big industry and I think everyone could benefit from reflecting on his work.

I would also recommend Germinal by naturalist, Emile Zola or The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. The latter book illustrates the life of a family of sharecroppers during the Dust Bowl while the former concerns the lives of workers in the French mines.

Great history

Gave a great view of the working conditions for miners before unions improved their situation. Sinclair tells it like it is.
