The Short Story Review wrote about Shaik s previous adult book, The Mayor of New Orleans: Just Talking Jazz, The trio of novellas is set in and around New Orleans where the mixed-race Creoles speak their own dialect...Shaik writes with empathy and compassion about the lower rungs of New Orleans society. There are no villains here, nor is there the damp-palm voyeurism we have seen in other New Orleans-set stories. National Public Radio called her book a terrific, charging solo. Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Kirkus, and the San Francisco Chronicle also praised the collection.

About the Author
Fatima Shaik is a member of PEN American Center and the author of books for adults and children. Publishers Weekly wrote "this native of New Orleans whose keen ear for dialogue and languid style help capture the special ambiance of Louisiana."
Her work has appeared in the Review of Contemporary Fiction, The Southern Review, Callaloo, The New York Times, In These Times and others. She is an Assistant Professor at Saint Peter's University and a former assistant editor of McGraw-Hill World News.

For decades I've been a visitor to the Crescent City, New Orleans, but always as exactly that—a visitor. I'd head for the French Quarter, the elegant Garden District, maybe down to the Mississippi to watch the boats. If I encountered a neighborhood, particularly one like the Ninth Ward depicted in What Went Missing and What Got Found, the object would be to move on through as quickly as possible. Don't get involved.

But when I stepped into this same neighborhood and met Achilles, Loutie, Sister Michael Patrick, Sweet Pea and the other characters created by Fatima Shaik, I quickly became part of the community. These folks became my friends. I cared about them and continue to now that the book is closed and on my shelf.

I first met them during ordinary times, just living their own dramas, and then—disaster!

Hurricane Katrina.

These lives changed as the storm changed and horrified the city, the nation and the world. What happened? The final stories look at how Katrina immediately changed each life in drastic and different ways.

This book is author Shaik's recognition of the tenth anniversary of this overwhelming natural disaster. As our memories of Katrina's horrors fade into the decades we should not, and for readers of this book cannot, forget the personal losses that are part of its entire story. Once again, stories are the true record of history.

I'm looking forward to my next New Orleans visit. I'll feel right at home, and I'm hoping I'll run into some of my new friends.

Insider's Guide to a City Like No Other

In the years since Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has come to the attention of many writers and artists who have sought to investigate its problems and its charm, to portray and explain this city that is like no other in America.
That's fine I suppose.
But long before New Orleans hit the headlines, Fatima Shaik, whose family goes back generations in the city and who grew up in a shotgun house in the Seventh Ward, was soaking up the particular, unique flavor of the city. Without having to investigate she knows what people eat for breakfast (grits and toast), what to do when too much sweat makes fat people stick together (run for ice cubes), and how to describe people who have grown markedly peculiar, even for New Orleans ("teched," "He has a young mind," "A. Little. Slow.")
Most of all she has soaked up the language, one that is English, yes, but full of other mysterious stuff that creates its unique cadences as seen in the very beginning lines of "Charity Begins at Home," "The bench inside the front yard fence is a long bench. It's made of wood slats and ornery nails with everything painted over a thick green by hand. It runs across the driveway gate where the cars don't go out anymore. I've heard people call this bench wide. That always made Mama and Papa stiffen up from where they were sitting, center of the bench, hid in the shadows from the sun."
Sorry outsiders--one of which I must count myself--you will never get it right. Futhermore, you probably will never be able to understand, much less penetrate, the delicate, complicated web of relation and association that--judging from these pages--that holds everything together, come what may.
But I do advise anyone who really wants to get a glimpse of New Orleans to read and marvel at this wonderful collection.
The early stories reflect, I suspect, observations Shaik made as a child: Mama and Papa on the porch, tended by their A. Little. Slow daughter Loutie; "Teched" Thomas whose strangely literate graffiti puzzle passersby, the weary nun who, faith renewed, follows her student to dance in a thunder storm.
The later stories have Hurricane Katrina in mind, my favorite of which is the "The Hotels" with its three intertwining stories of people living--or sometimes not--through those terrible hours: A pair of old lovers tries to ride out the storm at home. Newly weds--he's local; she's not--get a crash course on what separates them. A family finds itself in the hell of the Super Dome, kept in like criminals by armed National Guard.
Of the three, my favorite is the story of the long-married couple, Sweet Pea and Davis, a love story as a beautiful tragic as anything devised by Shakespeare. These two have already been through a lot together. For one thing, Davis in his younger years took advantage of his opportunities, many in the form of white women staying at New Orleans' French Quarter hotels, all "dying for a black man." In those days he would look at his wife and see in her eye: "OK fool, I know you are lying and I just about hate you." But in age, Davis regrets what he did, wishing he had understood more about true happiness, wishing he had spent more time with those who loved him: "Funny," he muses, "how wildness ain't enough."
Davis and Sweet Pea have been through this storm and then several put on by Mother Nature. Once they followed orders to evacuate, only to eat up all their provisions still stuck on the highway and finally turn back.
In the confusion of Katrina they end up together at home in their bed, hoping for the best. As Sweet Pea says--in what I take to be a philosophical underpinning of the place -- "Living is not really for us. We just passing time. Might as well spend it one way as another. Make yourself happy."
And so they are happy for now, spooned up together. Then the water suddenly rises, is in the bed with them, so that Davis hurriedly ties their clothes together, hoping that the storm cannot do what life itself has been unable to achieve: cause them to be swept apart.

An Emotional, Suspenseful, Brilliant Novel

The Lost Girls is an emotional roller-coaster of a book. I winced, I laughed, I smiled and I cried my eyes out. The plot is suspenseful, scary, harrowing and exciting. Mostly though, it is smart. While I read it, I kept thinking, "My goodness, the research this author must do to make a story so smart, so complex, so accurate." The details are intricate; there is never "just a story."

Besides the very smart and well-written plot, there are the emotional scenes, the gripping and well-developed characters, and the usual ambiguous feelings of wanting to finish it but not wanting it to be over. I hope the Lucy/Sean books are never over because I love these characters and having read all the books since Lucy was introduced back before her series, I feel like I've watched her grow up. Sean is my favorite character but I do love all the supporting characters. How I would love to be a Rogen or Kincaid or both.

Time felt like it dragged until this latest book by Allison Brennan was released and now, I've already finished it and have to wait months for the next one. At this point, I don't start to read an Allison Brennan book expecting to do anything but love it but I am still surprised each time by how much I love each book, how each manages to be even better than the last.

Another great read by Brennan

All the Lucy Kincaid novels are wonderfully wicked fast paced stories that never fail to engross and entertain the reader. I would suggest starting with the first Lucy Kincaid novel so you can follow the rich development of all the many fascinating characters that abound in these stories. Ms. Brennan has woven a wonderful tapestry between the Kincaid and Rogan clans that will have you turning pages until the wee hours of the night as both families fight against some of the world's worst deviants who prey on those unable to protect themselves. The subject matter can be horrific and appalling and take you places you'll wish you never knew about but interwoven with amazing characters so deeply concerned and committed to love and justice and each other that you'll be spellbound and always wanting more. Give this author a read and you'll find yourself going back for more! This voracious reader has already purchased the next book in this series due out next year.

Once again I knew I wouldn't be able to start this book without reading entirely at one time. Love, love this group of characters and their relationship to each other. Love Lucy and her strength . It was non stop movement from beginning to end. Wish I had the words Mrs. Brennan does to explain how much I enjoy reading her books. I know there are truly evil people in this world but there are also truly good and wonderful people to balance that evil. We all have strength we don't realize we have. Mrs Brennan shows this in her books which makes me return to read when she writes.

I feel that Harvard Business School ("HBS") Confidential is a concise and practical guidebook in relation to secrets of success in business, the ingredients of which are collectively made up of the author's knowledge, work experience and expertise gained from HBS, Boston Consulting Group, her entrepreneurial careers and her personal life. However, it is not a HBS textbook. You may explore further any area of your interest on your own and the author is nice to help and give advice.

I believe that the author's work experience in consulting has given her extensive industry and operations exposure. In essence, the confidentials given in the book are more than those acquired from HBS, which bodes well for readers.

On business strategy front, I do agree that planning is of paramount importance. The construction of a story or a big picture for the prospects of a company or a market calls for frameworks, data, logic, and time lines, which are about getting to details. Details are critical for an effective strategy and strategy planning process.

In the final chapter, the author shares with us some quotes she has heard several times during her HBS days, which both she and I considered extremely inspiring and pragmatic for our personal lives and careers. The essence of those quotes primarily encompasses the following:
(i) Get your plan right at the outset;
(ii) Always on high alert armed with a backup plan;
(iii) Embrace change and keep your eyes open for inefficiency, ineffectiveness, market changes or new technologies that indicate change is necessary. I consider that it is also crucial to recognize patterns and crystallize trends, in particular paradigm shift;
(iv) Be passionate about your work, which will enhance your odds of success; and
(v) Be determined to succeed. Perseverance, stamina and courage are essential elements in the pursuit of your ambitions.

The book is quite rightly sized and handy. You don't need to have strong business background to comprehend it. Perhaps, senior business executives may not be satisfied as they may already know more than half of what the book reveals. However, I consider from a strategic perspective that the book offers visionary business leaders and corporate strategists a holistic approach to the long term development and growth of a corporation. While I am an experienced investment professional and found it easy to read and understand, it will form part of my personal collection of interesting and inspiring business books.

OK but does what many other similar books do just as well.

Harvard Business School has an almost unrivalled reputation for schooling some of the greatest business leaders. Former graduate, Emily Chan, who went on to work for leading management consultancy Boston Consulting Group and who is now a director in a family direct investment business in Hong Kong, promises to offer the secrets she learnt there. Does she succeed?

There's arguably a timing issue in a book of this nature. With the current global economic problems, it's perhaps not the best time to be championing the lessons taught in the bastion of Western business education that counts many of the bankers, politicians and business leaders that have caused the problems amongst its illustrious alumni.

But while the book is clearly written and logically well layed out, I couldn't help but be somewhat underwhelmed by this book. The business publishing sector is incredibly crowded and does this book add anything not available elsewhere (in management speak, is there anything that `differentiates' this book)? I'm not so sure.

The book breaches one management issue that she ignores, namely `'don't over-promise and under-deliver'`. There's not much that's confidentially Harvard. Set out into three main themes of Personal, Operations and Strategy, she gives a whistle stop tour of things she's either learned at Harvard, picked up at Boston Consulting and read in the Harvard Business Review. In only one chapter does she offer comment from the Module Notes provided to students - which is interesting - but much of the content is not specifically Harvard, nor confidential. I studied a large part of the strategy content at high school, let alone at business school. Of course, that doesn't make it wrong, but my question is, what is she adding (or in business speak again, where's the `added value'?)

It's a little like sitting in a PowerPoint presentation of key management areas. Ms Chan is a process driven person (not surprisingly as she is an engineering graduate by training) and that's her focus. But there's a `soft' side to management that is largely ignored here. All these areas are widely taught - and certainly not specific to Harvard. Rather worryingly, the one bit that was new to me in her book made little sense until I looked it up in another text book. I suspect that, for the most part though, her thoughts are pretty clear to someone new to the subject.

The truth, which to be fair she acknowledges, is that the true value of Harvard is not so much in what is taught, but in the people you meet while spending two years there. You are going to be set up with contacts for life. But there's no short cut for that in reading a book.

Great insights, fun read

There are some really good ideas in this book and I really enjoyed reading it. The author has real world experience and shares what she learned throughout her tenure at HBS and at a consulting firm. I began applying some of the theoretical business analysis models during my internship over the summer with a non-profit organization in the OC area and the CEO, who was also my mentor, was blown away. I really wish that some of the chapters went into more detail and that there were more analytical tools, but I know that one book cannot do it all. It's a good starting point and if the reader wants to learn more about any particular subject, there are lots of other books out there to accomplish just that.
