The remaining texts (which some interpret as excluding women from ministry and leadership) are exegeted in detail and found to be restricted texts - dealing with specific issues in local churches. The final chapters of the book are practical applications for today concerning husband-wife relationships; comparing and contrasting authority, power, and leadership; and a offering parting challenge from the authors.
Deborah Menken Gill and Barbara Cavaness Parks are both ordained Christian leaders and have ministered around the world and in the United States. Both have earned Ph.Ds. from Fuller Theological Seminary (Cavaness' in Intercultural Studies and Gill's in Biblical Studies--Old and New Testaments). And both authors are educators (Gill is Professor of Biblical Studies and Exposition; and Cavaness is a global missionary educator).
The first edition of God's Women—Then and Now was released in 2004 (and a separate Study Guide also appeared in 2004). In addition to its three print editions, God's Women—Then and Now has also been published in Tamil, Finnish, and Spanish. Love this book!

Larger than normal print and using only first position makes this an excellent duet book for the beginning cello player.
Few materials like this on the market for the elementary student. The violin book works with the cello book, too.

Comes in Violin version for those who want to actually DO the duet thing!

I got this for my mom (who has a cello) and the violin version for me. We both JUST started playing as adult-learners, though she is a little ahead of me by a few months, and she is starting to learn some of the tunes. I got to hear the sound of the duet version when we went to a lesson and the teacher played the violin accompaniment. Our teacher really liked the books and thanked me for showing her something she hadn't seen before. Hopefully in the next couple months my mother and I can play "Ode to Joy" together and I can update my review to let you all know how that goes. :-)

Without having played myself I can say that my mom still thinks this is challenging even though it says "Easy", but it is something she (and hopefully soon I!) can work with. It is nice that the notes are so easy to read. This is great for beginners, people with poor vision, kids, seniors... and I like it because I am just learning how to read music and this makes each note so clearly visible.

Hopefully this review helps and hope you enjoy the book if you decide to try it out. :-)

Great music books for the beginner in their first few years of study and practice

Excellent beginner books for the violin or viola player in their first or second year. Larry Newman has an entire series of music books for violin, viola and cello that are all excellent for players in their first few years. I would not consider these lesson books, but books to supplement beginner players to learn more popular songs. For my young boys, I have the Don't Fret colored finger guide on their 1/4 and 1/2 violins. Then to help them find the correct notes, I will sometimes use a blue, yellow, pink and green or orange highlighter to color the notes on sheet music. I know it's a learning crutch, but it makes finding and playing the correct note faster and easier....the more positive feedback they get in playing a correct note, the longer they stay with learning music and different musical instruments (I hope). I also like the books because the songs are also easy enough for the beginner player to start memorizing songs too. Between the cello, violin and viola, I think we own all of them.

Finally a youth book worth five stars

This has been a long time coming, but is here at last. YS (through Zondervan) sent me a new book by one of my favorite authors of youth ministry stuff, Mark Yaconelli, son of Mike Yaconelli who used to be the CEO of youthspecialties.

A little caveat, if you do not work with youth (which you really ought to), you might find this post boring.

This book is a description of how to help teens pray. Young Yac wrote an excellent book on contemplative youth ministry, which in my opinion is a must read for youth pastors. His whole bent is not entertaining, but rather helping teens find God in the quiet places. In other words, being still so we can know that He is God. While the first book described youth ministry philosophy, this book is really an intro to prayer. I found it helpful in my own prayer life, as well as full of ideas regarding how to lead teens in prayer.

Note: teens are always seen as peers on a journey to God in this book rather than underlings.

The first part of the book is a philosophy of prayer, and the main portion is a description of many different ways to actually do it. Basicaly, the premise of the book is that prayer should be the foundation of youth ministry, not just regulated to brief popcorn prayers for the last five minutes of the class. Prayer is formative (it changes who we are), rather than our informative (only effecting part of our lives)teachings.

The proof that this is an effective work is in the result. I know a book is worth buying if I actually use it in the ministries I lead. I have used this book in nearly every youth meeting I have led since reading it. Definitely worth the investment. I cannot recommend this book enough to fellow youth workers.

The information in this book is excellent based on ten years of research that the author acguired. The prayer exercises are very appropriate for teenagers. The content is aligned with other books and authorities who studied prayer.
