Required Reading for Animal Lovers

I have been in the veterinary industry for over 15 years. Sadly, we often send condolence cards to owners when their pets pass away. Many years ago I started seeing a particular quote by Irving Townsend on these cards. It read, "We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necesssary plan." It took over 15 years to stumble across the book that contains this quote, but it was worth the wait. I recommend it from the heart. A truly memorable experience.

How can there be nothing on the Amazon Author's Page or a biography on Wikipedia about Mr. Townsend ?! This is one of the most touching and charming books I have EVER read. "The Once Again Prince" is a story of such dignity--lyrical, simple, moving. It contains easily the most memorable quote about animal loss ever written. Each story in this short book is exquisite. I can't remember the last time I have been so deeply affected by words.

Irving Townsend revisits the lives of some of his favorite animals and the ways they have touched him. Read about Prince, the horse saved from an auction, who blossomed and came into his own; the cat without a name who shared his life for a few months to recover from an injury. These are the characters, but he tells their stories as they affect him. It is his sense of loss that we feel and understand. An excellent book for anyone who has ever loved or lost a pet or companion animal.

This is an excellent book, even for those without background knowledge of the topic. It is thorough, and easy to understand. I was introduced to the topic in my college class, and have learned a great deal more, in detail in this book. This is an excellent selection for students, professionals, and people with a natural interest in the subject.

Brain Research Classic Reference

Going through this book was like reading a 350 page article in Scientific American. We find in "Left Brain, Right Brain" the same tone and the same level of science writing. And like for a magazine article, it is all about a single topic: brain lateralization. Even though the book is written in a very clear language it could still pose a challenge for the lay reader. For the jargon is a bit technical at times. But this kind of vocabulary should please the undergraduate student looking for an introduction to contemporary research in cognitive neuroscience. The book has been revised five times since its first publication in 1981. The last edition dates back to 1998, so it obviously does not discuss the latest findings. But most of the material remains valid today. What makes this book especially valuable is that it covers the important period when most of the modern tools of investigation were first introduced. The technology has since been refined, and so has the research. But the basic structure of the brain had already been established in this pioneering phase when scientists started to use a variety of scanning devices to study the brain. Because this book was for a long time the only one to offer for the non specialist a complete overview of the research that was conducted in this exhilarating period it has become a neuroscience classic reference. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the scientific investigation of the human brain.

It does have elements of the old novel, Replay, but carries that type of time travel to a much more interesting conclusion. Later, her mother is too busy for special words, and the school bus is too noisy. Lola's growing frustration over her inability to express herself is delightfully drawn. Each picture shows the little creature more and more distraught, until she finally explodes with emotion at dinnertime. Lola's parents respond generously with kisses, and all is well until bedtime when Lola worries whether her special words will be back on her lips in the morning. Resembling in spirit and content such books as Sam McBratney's Guess How Much I Love You? (1995, not reviewed), this book stars Lola, a nut-brown hamster who could be an adopted cousin of Nutbrown Hare. Lola feels words puffing out her cheeks, bursting inside her, but when she tries to express her special words, her father is leaving for work and her mother is too busy. The school bus, cafeteria, and playground are too noisy for the words to be heard, and the teacher is preoccupied. Lola returns home and sulks until the words unwittingly ``came flying out of her mouth and worked their magic.'' It's no surprise that Lola's special words are ``I love you, I love you! I love you so much!'' Hugs abound among the puffy-cheeked rodents in this mushy, overstated tale and its greeting-card message. Wonderful story and illustrations

I purchased this book in Dutch when I was visiting Holland a few weeks ago. I always purchase a childrens' book for a little friend of mine when I travel overseas. Sometimes I'm able to find something in the native language with an English translation. Or, I buy the native language version and get some help with a translation. I spent quite a while looking through the childrens' section in an Amsterdam bookstore and fell in love with the story (which I thought I understood in spite of my lack of understanding of Dutch) and the illustrations. I got some help translating the book and will be curious to see how close my version comes to the published one! The illustrations are wonderful. I think they will appeal to 2-5 year-olds and also to the adults reading to them. There are some wonderful little details in them.

Some times you just have to say it...........

This book is wonderful! The pictures are great and the story is lovely.
My 7 year old refers to Lola as the little girl whose cheeks keep getting biggger until the words just have to come out.
The book only takes about 5 minutes to read but the message will last a life time. It tells children, and parents, how important it is that we tell the people we love, "I love you, I love you, I love you so much!"
This would be a great book for new parents to begin reading to their bundle of joy right from the start.
A favorite in our home and is sure to be one in your home too.
