5 Great Short Stories

I read the original French text in the Folio edition, and this review is based on that.

Sartre is one of my favourite French writers, and these short stories (his only short stories, to my knowledge) are terrific tokens of his talent.

The first story - The Wall - deals with a couple of prisoners as they live their last moments; it is a terrible experience to see through the eyes of someone who will die shortly, and whose very approaching death seems to kill any value to life before physical death settles in.

The second story - The Chamber - deals with madness.

The third - Erostrate (I forget the exact spelling) - is about a man who positively hates humanity and plans to kill a bunch of them with his gun. He also enjoys mistreating an old prostitute. Excellently written and sordidly fascinating.

The fourth - Intimacy - deals with love in its ugliest aspects. It is nevertheless a terrific story to read, and one can only be amazed that it was published in 1939, because when you read that, you'd think the text would be much older.

The last story - The Childhood of a Leader - is the longest, well over 100 pages, and published as a novella in some editions - is probably the most striking of all of them. It tells the story of a boy who explores himself through various intellectual movements (psychoanalysis, surrealism, etc.) and goes through many odd adventures, including pederasty, to eventually end up as a Jew hater and a far right militant. The story ends when he firmly steps into adulthood and leaves his young years behind, and decides to grow a moustache, the symbol of little boys who believe they are now adults and grown experienced men.

Recommend to anyone into Sartre and anyone able to appreciate a good short story. Fascinating stuff from the Nobel Prize winner (and refuser) that Jean-Paul Sartre is.

Thorough workbook that addresses issues critical to healing from sexual abuse

As I Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist I ordered this workbook for use with adolescent and young adult clients who have experienced or are experiencing some form of sexual abuse. Many people who read books about abuse (or who even begin therapy to deal with abuse-related issues) often voice the common complaint that they don't find enough in the way of strategies that address the multi-faceted, roller-coaster-like feelings experienced during this critical time of healing. I have been quite pleased with this workbook, as it normalizes symptoms of hurt, fear, frustration, anger, etc. -- rather than making someone feel like an outcast as they deal with their state of "brokenness". In Their Own Words is a positive, solution-focused workbook that addresses every area one could imagine regarding sexual abuse -- highly recommended!

I am now purchasing several workbooks to keep in my office, just to have them on hand. While this workbook is designed to be used in conjunction with therapy, it may also be beneficial with good, qualified mentoring or in group settings that are therapeutic in nature. It is possible to use this workbook without being in therapy (although there are several exercises related to working through the abuse with a therapist); however, I would recommend additional guidance in the case of younger adolescents.

I have used this book numerous time with girls who have been sexually abused but do not have posttraumatic stress disorder. It has been quite helpful and structures the sessions well.

an excellent therapy tool

I'm a therapist and have used this book as adjunct tool with clients. It has psychoeducational information written in an accessible way, exercises, journaling sections, questions one can use for discussion, and pieces written by other children. I have found it very helpful, particularly with adolescents. It was recommended by the team who teach Trauma-focused CBT for children. A truly useful book for one's professional library.

Worth it for Christmas Carol History enthusiasts

Printing could have been better, but that's the risk of these reprints, they are only as good as the scan. That said I was great to be able to get one of the earliest printed sources for the 12 Days of Christmas. I was delighted to find the book included some games as well.

About the Author
Alex Watson is a middle school student who was born in Hawaii but now resides in Boca Raton, Florida, where he enjoys hiking, playing music, and spending days at the beach. Watson is a professor at Lynn University in Florida who has published many books on American politics and history. He is also Alex s father. A wonderful book for tween-agers and teens

I just finished reading "Tsunami," and it's GREAT!!. The plot is creative and exciting and makes you want to keep reading. It was hard to put the book down when I had to do other things. It's also a book that both boys and girls can enjoy reading.

What a great read

Alex Watson is 12 years old and has published his first book with his Dad, Robert Watson. What a great read, and it's not just for kids. I read it and was very impressed with the plot,and the Hawaiin customs that are interwoven through the scenes in Hawaii. The authors obviously did a lot of research, and the descriptions of the Tsunami were very detailed, so the reader felt like they were experiencing the same event as the rest of the characters. Character development and description was very well done as well. It was a great travel experience for young people to read about, with some plot twists along the way. I highly recommend this book for anyone of all ages.

The best

This is one of the best books on Jin Shin Jyutsu on the market today. It does not cover everything on Jin Shin, which would be difficult to do in one book, but what it does cover it does a good job on. It does not go into the depths but does cover the points and the organ flows. The author does not hold back on giving the complete organ flows as many Jin Shin books do. It also lightly goes over the use of finger holds and trinity flows.

Another wonderful addition to the book is 100 pages on different illnesses and how to approach them using Jin Shin. This is something which is lacking even in the official Jin Shin text books.

Even though Jin Shin is considered a healing art, it is highly controlled by a corporation in the USA and Canada. What is refreshing about this book is that the author is from Germany and is out of reach of this corporate control. But in order for her to print her book in English and be distributed in the USA and Canada she had to change the name of the book from Jin Shin Jyutsu to Jin Shin Fee. But it is the same art. Many people are starting to print their own books on Jin Shin Jyutsu these days because they studied under Mary but not her son, who is currently running the corporation now that she has passed on. Healers involved in the art want to share their knowledge even though its teachings are being suppressed for corporate profit reasons. So they write books sharing some of the art. The main thing they can not do is keep Jyutsu in with the name Jin Shin Jyutsu. So one can find books which have Jin Shin in the title but which omit the Jyutsu and replace it with another word so they will not get sued. Be that as it may, most these books are true to the art which Mary brought to the states and are well worth investigation.

Jin Shin is a great healing art and warrants looking into. The corporate part of the art is not as important because it's bottom line is profits. It is high time that the secretiveness and cultishness of Jin Shin Jyutsu corporation be sidestepped so the art can flourish. This is one great book and step in that direction of sharing this art uncensored.

Love this!!

I have studied Jin Shin for almost a decade now thru the available books on the subject. I am not in a position to take in person training. This book has a different approach than the Touch of Healing book. I use both of them all the time. I consider this book an excellent tool, and have recommended it and given it as a gift often. It is easy to use and understand when you need help in a hurry. Last year I experienced a life threatening circumstance that resulted in three major surgical procedures in less than two months. My doctor was amazed at my recovery. But I know what the art of Jin Shin is capable of and I was certain of the rewards of using this tool. Give yourself a great gift, learn to use Jin Shin.

great for applying Jin Shin to specific ailments

Jin Shin was developed by, Jiro Murai, a Japanese man who discovered it in the early 1900's while looking for ways to heal himself of leukemia. It was taken to the USA in the 1950's by Mary Burmeister, an American born lady of Japanese origins who studied with him in Japan.

Jiro Murai is said to have rediscovered Jin Shin as it was an ancient Art which had fallen into relative obscurity. It is based on the same energy flows as acupuncture. But Jin Shin works using the hands as "jumper cables" to connect up various points in the body. The hands are simply placed on the relevant areas of the body and no pressure or tapping is used.

I have bought all the books I can get my hands on (pardon the pun) about Jin Shin. What I really like about this book is that it offers a guide to treating specific ailments as well as acting as a general intro. I have not come across any other book about Jin Shin which goes into treating so many specific ailments so clearly.

What I like about Jin Shin is that I can feel it start to work almost right away. I also like it that it is easy to apply it to myself, or I can use it on others. It is simply a matter of learning various points on the body and linking those up through our hands to balance and harmonize the energy flow and create healing. Some of the Jin Shin healing treatments are very unobtrusive. It is even possible to apply some Jin Shin healing treatments to oneself while casually sitting in a cafe or whatever - without drawing attention to oneself.

You will see Jin Shin under different names if you search around. The author Felicitas Waldeck, calls it Jin Shin Fee. Others refer to it as Jin Shin Jyutsu or Jin Shin Tara. These are all basically the same thing. Jin Shin Jyutsu was the original version and the other version derived from it.

However, you may also come across Jin Shin Do - which is something different. It also derived from Jin Shin Jyutsu, but it is an acupressure or a therapeutic massage technique. The system in this book does not use pressure at all. Jin Shin Jyutsu/Fee/Tara is a system where hands or fingers on simply placed on particular places on the body. If confused in looking at other books, just see if the book is about acupressure or therapeutic massage. If so it is not the same system.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting to know how to use Jin Shin to treat specific ailments and who is happy to pick up a book on something and just give it a go. A very handy addition to anyone's Jin Shin book collection.

These principles are then applied to the speech mechanism itself and to the particular kinds of sound which constitute speech. There is a fully illustrated account of the use of the sound spectrograph in acoustic analysis and chapters dealing with the acoustic features of English sounds and with the way we recognise speech sounds by the acoustic cues inherent in a particular language. Professor Fry gave courses on the physics of speech to students of applied as well as theoretical linguistics and to speech therapists, and his clear account will therefore provide a basic textbook for such courses as well as being of interest to people working in departments of speech and in communications generally.

This book got me an A.

I struggled all semester long with Tax I. I purchased Examples and Explanations because I'd had good experiences with other topics before. As soon as I started reading the E&E along with my class assignments (or in place of them), it all came together. It offers some concrete explanations and then provides questions with great factual variations. My exam was multiple choice, so the E&E material was perfect preparation. Seriously, how could ~$35 not be a great investment when it returns an A? Buy this book.

The book does a great job of breaking down some concepts

I bought this supplement as an aid for my Federal Income Tax course and finally the Professor began to make some sense to me! The book does a great job of breaking down some concepts, but I only gave 4 stars because there are instances where it presupposes that the reader has a deeper knowledge of the topic than may be true. Overall, highly recommended!
