My boys just got the book (they're big fans of all things Bad Kitty) so here's their review:
"...in one of the parts, the baby screams so loud that aliens on another planet can hear it. I really like this book" said my 6.5 year old.
"It's a great book and it's really funny I got to say" said my 8 year old. "Every part of the book contains lots of good illustrations and writing that has feeling in it." (!!!)
This is the first book for the boys' summer reading lists and it's really great to have them wanting to read it rather than go to battle over reading. Highly recommend!

Bad Kitty has destroyed her house! She's terrorized her own birthday party! She's pummeled her owner during the dreaded 'bath attempt'! She's sent Uncle Murray into a state of shock while (attempting to) housesit her and Puppy! But has Kitty finally met her match?
'Bad Kitty Meets the Baby' pits Kitty against the new baby and hilarity (and destruction) ensue when Kitty decides the baby has to go. In the battle of Kitty verses 'the baby', who will win? Hilarity ensues when Kitty tries to put the baby for sale (along with a 'free Puppy'), then tries to box the baby up much to her owner's dismay. And when Kitty's friends instigate the 'Cat Olympics' (and make the baby an official cat...)in a winner-take-all 'who's the best cat' standing will Kitty win or has she met her match in...'the baby'?
Anyone who loves the 'Bad Kitty' books will definitely enjoy this one as well! It's hilarious, it's entertaining and Bruel has included his usual 'Uncle Murray's Fun Facts'. Definitely worth buying and adding to the collection!

Funny Story with a great message

Bad Kitty had it really good until Puppy came along. It took quite a while for Bad Kitty to get used to having Puppy around. Everything was almost back to normal when A BABY SHOWS UP!!! Bad Kitty isn't sure what this new thing is! She thinks maybe it's a kind of dog. Bad Kitty's cat friends come over and she thinks that they will certainly help get rid of this new dog but her friends think the baby is a cat and enter the baby in the Pussycat Olympics! Will the baby be a better cat than Bad Kitty? Will Bad Kitty succeed in trying to get rid of the baby? WILL the baby EVER get her bath? Read the book to find out!

The Bad Kitty chapter books aren't complicated stories but there is always a nice message in each. Mr. Bruel's latest Bad Kitty chapter book that puts Bad Kitty versus a new baby has a really great message about adoption and family at the end. The book is an easy read and the characters are great. I enjoyed reading it a lot. I like how the owners of Bad Kitty add narration throughout the book even thought you never really see them. I think it is an excellent book for kids 8+ and even younger advanced readers. The book would be great for kids who have trouble reading through an entire book because, in this book, the illustrations help tell the story and this may keep some kids interest. I went back a couple of times through the book to look at the illustrations again and again because they add so much to the story.

Fantastic!

What a wonderful book. This covers all types of dinosaurs from T-Rexes to flying bird dinosaurs. Hundreds of great drawings throughout. I can't draw but I still enjoyed looking at it and my ten year old son will not put the thing down. He was allowed to take one book on our vacation and he chose this one. I don't think he put it down for the whole 6 hour drive to Disneyland. There are some technical drawings of skeletons and muscles and stuff I don't think he understands yet, but the how to steps are easy enough for him to follow. Highly recommended if you have a dinosaur lover or artist in the family.

The best book on the subject yet!

You may think me biased, since some of my reconstructions where used in the book, but I did not write any of it (and I don't recieve royalties based on sales). While there are a few nit-picky details I would change, this is easily the best book on how to draw dinosaurs ever made. It is the only one where the reader is given a short anatomy lesson, and shown skeletal reconstructions so artists can learn how to reconstruct extinct animals themselves. It also shows off the remarkable diversity of dinosaurs to good advantage. Highly recomended.

superb drawing book

This is probably the best book on drawing dinosaurs out there, especially for adults. There isn't just one artist's dinosaurs pictured into this "how-to" book, but artwork from Brett Booth and Bryan Baugh as well. Many dinosaurs are featured in here, including Triceratops, Spinosaurs, Therizinosaurus, Chirostenotes, Saltasaurus, and dozens more. Generally depending on which dinosaur you are drawing, it can take you between 1-4 steps to complete your picture. Also, there is information for each dinosaur you draw, which makes it all the more interesting. The artwork is very detailed and sleek. Excellent for any beginner or if you're just trying to brush up on your skills.

THE NEW YORK CENTRAL's 20th CENTURY LIMITED

Lucius Beebe (1902-1966) was a unique character. The scion of a prosperous Boston family, he also belonged to the elite group of persons who were expelled from both Harvard and Yale. Early in his career as a writer, he published a book of poetry. But he became known as a society columnist, and was known for his fascination with high society, exclusive clubs, good food and drink, and extravagant apparel. He would seem the least likely person to develop a passion about railroads, especially archaic, single-engine short lines and Colorado narrow gauge roads. But he not only developed such a passion; he became the chief practitioner--almost the originator--of the railroad photograph book. Over a quarter century, he published roughly 20 such books, which often featured photographs he had taken himself--although it takes an effort to picture this Boston aristocrat standing in the mud beside the track waiting to photograph the passing of a local freight.

It is perhaps curious that it was not until 1962 that Beebe published this book about the New York Central's 20th Century Limited--the train that he considered the greatest train in the world. The 20th Century, an all-bedroom express train, ran overnight between New York City and Chicago, and was patronized by the elites of society, high finance, literature, and entertainment. Beebe himself was a frequent passenger on the 20th Century, where he continued his customary life style. He described one trip (presumably not the only one) on which he "slept the sleep of the unjust, awash with Hennessy three star and Upmann Coronas."

Beebe strongly preferred the pre-1938 20th Century: "The finely maintained dark green steel cars, the incredibly sleek and purposeful Hudson type engines, the cut flowers in public apartments and the beautiful table linen spoke of security and the best of everything in a well ordered world in which extra fare people got extra fare dividends of service, civility and swift assurance of transport." He observed that "the décor of substantial respectability was matched by a clientele of assured substance which traveled in an atmosphere of decorous propriety." In Beebe's eyes, things began to go downhill in 1938, when the 20th Century adopted steam engines and cars streamlined in an art-deco fashion by Henry Dreyfuss, and switched from open-platform observation cars to closed streamlined observation cars. For Beebe, things got even worse with the advent of diesels, which though "utilitarian and economical beyond all their predecessors," were "without style, distinction or claim to aesthetic attention."

Like his other books, the 20th Century (181 pages) devotes most of its space to black and white photographs (there are two color paintings). But these are accompanied by much substantive text describing the history, equipment, operation and personalities associated with the train. There are chapters about early (1890s) rail travel between New York and Chicago, the origin and history of the 20th Century (and the Pennsylvania Railroad's Broadway Limited, the 20th Century's principal rival), dining on the 20th Century, the New England section that brought passengers from Boston and connected with the 20th Century in Albany, and some of the wealthy passengers who rode the 20th Century.

The book is profusely illustrated with 60+ years of photographs of engines, cars, trains, stations, including interior shots of on-train bedroom facilities, barber shops, dining cars, kitchens, lounge cars, train crews and famous passengers. Even train wrecks and derailments. The selection of images reflects Beebe's preference for the early days. (When warned that the 1948 election might set the country back 50 years, Beebe is supposed to have responded, "What was wrong with 1898?") There are also facsimiles of advertisements, newspaper articles and train schedules. The appendix includes a table showing how the train's schedule has evolved over the years (from 20 hours in 1902 down to 16 hours by 1938), and another table that provides such technical information about 1896-1931 engines as their dates of construction, costs, weights, and tractive efforts.

I very much enjoyed this book, much early history of the 20th Century Limited. I had hoped there would be more on the lightweight incarnation of the Century, but overall I was lost in time!

I am reading Pawn Structure Chess right now. Here's the scoop. I have this book for about a year or so, skimmed it when it arrived, and then shelved it like so many others. A typical scenario I guess. I am an endgame player and until now have always spoken negatively about openings. Many authors such as Soltis himself, Dvoretsky, Aagaard, Giddins, and Nunn, just to name a few, have stated that (paraphrasing) openings are fashionable, or exhaustible. That is to say that what is here today may not be here tomorrow, but this in no way means that one cannot adopt any line of one's choosing and play it consistently. In Studying Chess Made Easy, also by Soltis, he pointed to the "paradoxical" (his word) relationship between memory and understanding i.e. between the openings, and the middlegame. He says 'what good is remembering how to reach a position, or tabiya, if when you get there you don't understand what is going on'? And conversely, what good is learning a middlegame position and its typical plans, if you don't remember how to get there in the first place? To my mind this is not paradoxical at all if the game is viewed as an organic whole. (I am not offering criticism of Soltis in any form. I am simply going to state that for me things took a different course. I have nothing but praise for Soltis and I recommend all of his books. I have six or seven. He is the only American chess author I read. He is a wonderful writer in general, and he really understands his audience). What Pawn Structure Chess does is familiarize you with typical methods of play that are organically connected to the opening. For example, I have (intuitively) played a Slav many times for both colors. But I did NOT know about Tchigorin's ...e5 Plan until Soltis brought it to my attention in Pawn Structure Chess. This 'plan' is well over a hundred years old! What does this mean? Well, it means that I have a lot of research to do. Sometimes, as it is this time for me, a chess book comes along at the right time and fills a gap. And so it is with Pawn Structure Chess. Basically the book is about typical methods of middlegame play based on pawn structure. This is why incidentally Pawn Structure Chess is not an openings book, but a middlegame manual. The layout is highly instructive, simple, and beautiful.

Only wish I'd listened to the teachers about texts like this earlier

I regret to say, I wasted too many years as a class "B" chess player trying to improve by primarily working on my openings. I guess I just found opening theory more interesting. I finally got around to working through this text, (and now have several more middle game texts in the queue).

The material can be difficult and sometimes a little dry, and one needs to engage in relatively small doses, an individuals understanding of chess will be greatly rewarded by the effort. I have thus far spent about 12 hours and am roughly 2/3rds of the way through this text. Already, I find myself getting into better positions with a clearer understanding and more confidence, particularly where pawn levers, and other pawn structure considerations are involved. I expect to return to this book in a few months and refresh my memory of the material, especially in positions where my opening repertoire is involved.

A serious work for serious intermediate players, who are tired of languishing and want to make genuine progress in the game they love.

Has made a big difference in a short amount of time.

I just received this book a few days ago. I opened it to the section on the English opening pawn formation. What i have already read has made a huge diffrence in how i play the English. I thought i knew the opening pretty well, but how wrong i was! Soltis does an exremely good job of explaining the different pawn formations, and how to use them to your advantage. I would recommend this book for USCF C players and above.
My only complaint is that the section on the English is short.
