Twelfth Night, or What You Will: The Oxford Shakespeare Twelfth Night, or What You Will (Oxford World's Classics), by William Shakespeare

Twelfth Night is one of the most popular of Shakespeare's plays in the modern theatre, and this edition places particular emphasis on its theatrical qualities throughout. Peopled with lovers misled either by disguises or their own natures, it combines lyrical melancholy with broad comedy.

The introduction analyses its many views of love and the juxtaposition of joy and melancholy, while the detailed commentary pays particular attention to its linguistic subtleties.

Music is particularly important in Twelfth Night, and this is the only modern edition to offer material for all the music required in a performance. James Walker has re-edited the existing music from the original sources, and where noe exists has composed settings compatible with the surviving originals.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-In this verbal and visual treat, readers have the opportunity to enjoy one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies. Coville's author's note explains that his prose adaptation is "not meant as a replacement for the original, but as an appetizer for the greater feast still to come." Thus, the story is clear and carefully told, making it easy both to follow the primary and secondary plot lines and to appreciate the intricacies of their interweavings. Coville keeps the flavor of the playwright's poetic language by using actual quotes from the play and expressions and a formal sentence structure true to the style of Elizabethan times. Delightful full-page, colored pen-and-ink illustrations add just the right touch of humor to the already wacky tale. Raglin gives a distinctive identity to all of the characters, despite their attempted disguises, and he does a particularly good job of differentiating the buffoons of the subplot from the more realistically drawn dramatis personae. Colors and designs clearly suggest the Italian court dress of the times, and accurate architectural details add life to the settings. More suited to modern audiences than Charles and Mary Lamb's classic Tales from Shakespeare (Signet, 1986), and far better written than Jan Dean's Twelfth Night (Oxford, 2002), this is a version that will have young listeners begging to portray the Bard's scenes onstage. And, isn't that, after all, the whole point?-Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. The latest in Coville's series of retold Shakespearean plays, this volume provides a short, prose version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, a romantic comedy that offers young people such promising elements as separated twins, a woman disguised as a man, a drunken buffoon, courtship, swordplay, mistaken identity, and a practical joke. Though simplified, the story is intact and bits of the original language are preserved. Large-scale ink drawings, warmed with tints of color and shaded with cross-hatching, clearly depict the action. As Coville states in his Author's Note, "Twelfth Night remains one of the most read and performed of Shakespeare's plays." Children looking for a preperformance introduction to the play's twisting plot will find this an appealing choice. Carolyn Phelan

Excellent addition to your 12 Night shelf
By Sammy Clemens
There are several really worthwhile editions of 12th Night, but don't overlook this one.

The Foreword and notes are excellent and useful; the format's sturdy and readable.

It's a good copy to have for the scholar/performer/director.

Understanding Shakespeare
By Amazon Customer
For a long time I would not let my students use No Fear because I wanted them to be able to read the play in Shakespeare's words, but when I tired to discuss the plays with them, I always felt like I was the only who read the play. (I use it for Hamlet as well.) After I let them use it the first time, I was so excited to hear my students' comments on the play because they actually understood what they were reading. When they write about the play and when we discuss it, we use Shakespeare's words. We also compare the modern words and Shakespeare's words. I really like the No Fears and recommend them to people who really want to understand Shakespeare. I have taught high school and am now teaching at a university, so I know the No Fears are great on both levels.

Naxos complete recording the best so far
By F. Behrens
Please notice that G.H.'s in-house review above does not refer to the recording pictured above, nor do any of the reviews so far. What follows refers only to the Naxos set.
There are now three complete recordings of available. We have the older and elegantly read version on Harper Audio with Dorothy Tutin as the best Viola of the lot. Acted with a bit more verve though with less poetry is the Arkangel Shakespeare recording with a Scottish Malvolio and a cast of younger sounding actors who are making names for themselves in Great Britain. However I am very impressed with the "Twelfth Night" that is one of the latest additions to the Naxos Classic Drama series.
By far, this is the best-produced "Twelfth Night." One actually feels he is hearing an actual stage performance with all of the action but with the loss of none of the poetry. Perhaps the Viola does sound a little maturer than imagination would have her and the Sir Toby Belch a little less belchy sounding than others. None of the Festes sing as marvelously as did Peter Pears on the long deleted Marlowe Society recording (also with Tutin); however, on this Naxos set David Timson stays nicely in tune--and directs the production to boot. And he keeps things moving neatly along, which is saying a lot for Shakespeare recordings.
The CD version has the advantage of excellent tracking cues for not only each scene but for key points within the scene. The Harper CDs give a new track only for each new scene and the tapes (of course) are quite useless in that regard. The Arkangel series at present exists only on tapes but they are planning to reissue the entire series on CDs. So this Naxos release is the one of choice so far.

Applied Stochastic Processes presents a concise, graduate-level treatment of the subject, emphasizing applications and practical computation. It also establishes the complete mathematical theory in an accessible way.

After reviewing basic probability, the text covers Poisson processes, renewal processes, discrete- and continuous-time Markov chains, and Brownian motion. It also offers an introduction to stochastic differential equations. While the main applications described are queues, the book also considers other examples, such as the mathematical model of a single stock market.

With exercises in most sections, this book provides a clear, practical introduction for beginning graduate students. The material is presented in a straightforward manner using short, motivating examples. In addition, the author develops the mathematical theory with a strong emphasis on probability intuition.

Review

"The book provides a good background for a first course on stochastic processes as it covers the main topics and contains many examples."
―Zentralblatt MATH 1281

"The book under review provides a carefully written and concise introduction to stochastic processes and could be used as lecture notes for a first-year graduate course on stochastic processes with emphasis on applications and computation rather than theoretical aspects. It is especially suited for students in engineering or business who aim for applications in their respective field. … The book provides many examples and exercises, often of computational nature, from applied probability, for instance queueing theory and stock market models."
―Mathematical Reviews, August 2014

Review
"...This collection of essays is a celebration of global, peer-to-peer participation in social media, which is certainly impacting culture and education, in its span of concerns from the classroom to the world. Mizuko Ito discusses post-Pokemon media for children in Japan, where there is a convergence of old and new media forms that encourage hyper-social participation, even a degree of authoring, through personalization and remix. The arenas that allow this most thoroughly are Yugioh and Hamtaro. Yugioh is a consumers' constellation of serialized manga, card and video games, movies, and miscellaneous chara (cartoon character) merchandise. One survey in 2000 found that EVERY Japanese student in the third grade owned Yugioh cards. Each child regularly purchased five cards—cost, about a dollar—and there exists a robust collectors' market for single cards outside of the five-packs. The culture of tournaments and new releases is covered in Shonen Jump Weekly, where the comic also appeared. Hamtaro is a similar arena, but catering to girls, featuring a little girl character's pet hamster. The hamster stories have spawned book, an animated film in 2000 and over 50 hamster games. Some games determine which pet is the right one for your friends, or matches couples much as would a horoscope, has contests for drawing the various chara (or the Pokemon characters). Hamtaro has also spawned an active amateur comics scene. In Christina Schwalbe's essay "Change of Media, Change of Scholarship, Change of University" begins with a concept of Regis Debray, who so memorably divided the political planet into three worlds a generation ago during the cold war. More recently Debray has defined three mediospheres: the logosphere of words, the graphosphere of graphics, the videosphere of television. To that Schwalbe adds a now evolving digital mediosphere, containing the increasingly mashed-up scholarly research, publication, discussion, disputation, and function of academic disserations. To this she adds further comments on the European university and its evolution. Stefan Sonvilla-Weiss, the program director of a "Learning Intensive Society". His wide-ranging essay weaves together crowdsourcing, GPS child-tracking, social networking, bookmarking of blogs, RSS feeds, redefining new media literacy in the public and the amateur media artist. He cites the movie RIP as one digest of the issues. Ours is an era of culture hacking and civil engagement, from the culture jamming trivial flash mobs to the Pirate Party in Sweden and Germany, and looks to the philosopher Slovoj Zizek on complicity. Elsewhere, Wey-Han Tan condemns disruptive un-usability in some educational games, which devalues the game to zero once you don't want to play it again. Transmediacy in Japan is praised as giving a unifying experience to gameplay. The end result is a metagaming: awareness, sharing, hacking. In "A Classroom 2.0 Experiment", Noora Sopula and Joni Leimu employ an interactive wall projection system, 3D scanner, video project of online participation. Technology allows the ancient tradition of the campfire storyteller to expand into virtual reality and (eventual, they predict) telepathy. Brenda Castro presents a Virtual Art Garden, online GUI collaboration produced as a learning community for study of historical images as "plants", paintings viewed for scholarly understanding between the digital foliage. Adobe Breeze, the virtual world Second Life, the data glove and light pen all figured in various experiments in an ubiquitous computing model enhancing and enlivening the classroom. In other chapters, Tere Vaden of Wikiworlds personal Finnish University is interviewed by Juha Varto, and David Gauntlett shares answers he solicited on Web 2.0 issues, finding its origins in 1980s bulletin boards. Gauntlett notes an ongoing evolution of media manipulation into a hobby not a job. In one of the most theoretical of the essays here focused on transformations in the arts, Eduardo Navas' taxonomy of mashups breaks into discreet genera. The first is that of Regressive mashups, said to occur after two or more previously released songs are mashed. Frederick Jameson, J.-F. Lyotard and Theodor Adorno's theory of regression are all mustered in support, and the Macintosh graphic user interface introduced as mashup of a desktop metaphor. Reflexive mashup, such as a news feed, regulate constant change with respect to the work's remix history. Examples of this kind are Jamaican dub mixes, or disco remixes for longer stretches of nonstop dancing, that add and subtract audio elements. The Reflexive remix both require and showcases the track's history. Finally, Regenerative remixes are ahistorical updates that change the initial musical or audio data itself. But the mashup historian's question is: do Regenerative remixes mark an end to critical distance, in a youth culture where ahistoricity is the norm? Doris Gassert brings up Fight Club (1999) content and form, questioning the aesthetics of narrative in its process to digital form. Torsten Meyer contemplates writers block and its solution when posed with the enormity of the world. The writer contrasts the art exhibition Documenta 11, which was multi-site, disorganized, not user-friendly, with friendlier books, citations, and cyberhistory (an examination of CERN and its role in creation of the World Wide Web). Meyer years for some organizing principle, like Brunelleschi's perspective, productively imposed upon the architecture of his Florentine Baptistry. Axel Bruns calls the act of remixing mashups "produsage", a term which appropriately reads like sausage. A process dating back to 1920s Dada collages, it now flourishes in Wikipedia, Flickr, YouTube and Wikileaks. It is encouraged under the Creative Commons standard, where media is considered open source, unfinish and continuous, common property, probably giving the originator more intellectual rewards and citation than financial ones. Guitarist Robert Fripp said the pop music industry is "founded on exploitation, oiled by deceipt, riven with theft and fueled by greed". Note that the online newsletter Rock & Rap Confidential often headlines articles under the category Who Needs the Record Industry? Some mashup models call to mind the Museum of Jurassic Technology in California, a site of fiction that helps one to understand a greater truth about our understanding of science. Henry Jenkins - long interested in established and emerging artists' contexts - documents the Macarthur Foundation-funded Project New Media teacher's guide, and the use of Ricardo Pitts-Wiley's "Moby Dick: Then and Now" at Rhode Island Correctional facility. This remix might be compared to DJ Spooky's "Birth of a Nation" remix (or this reviewer's own 1990 "Hucklefine" Macintosh Hypercard reworking of Huckleberry Finn). Pitts-Wiley collaborated with young men in prison, who chose this classic to update because they were in agreement that the book was "All about the money!" Residents in the facility contributed metaphors of the color white, where the drug industry serves as whaling, Elijah sees the attack on New York on 9/11, and Ishmael is a Navy Seal with a dishonorable discharge for his drug habit. Jenkins laments that schools ignore other versions of a work in pop media of the classics, such as the myriad movie versions (which are watched intently in English literature classes in other nations, like Japan). One solution was that discovered by Tim Rollins and K.O.S., (Kids of Survival)in the 1980s, a struggling high school literature teacher and his students who painted upon the pages of a text. Melville's Moby Dick itself is often cited as a mashup, for its a raft of digressions, but what about the last two great whales of novels by James Joyce? Jenkins asserts that we all have the right - or obligation! - to revise, retell, remix the classics. A remix is then good if, rather than superficial or arbitrary, the new, ensuing work is aesthetic, meaningful and generative." Leonardo on-line, reviewed by Michael R. (Mike) Mosher, Saginaw Valley, State University

Changing on the Job: Developing Leaders for a Complex World, by Jennifer Garvey Berger

Listen to people in every field and you'll hear a call for more sophisticated leadership—for leaders who can solve more complex problems than the human race has ever faced. But these leaders won't simply come to the fore; we have to develop them, and we must cultivate them as quickly as is humanly possible. Changing on the Job is a means to this end.

As opposed to showing readers how to play the role of a leader in a "paint by numbers" fashion, Changing on the Job builds on theories of adult growth and development to help readers become more thoughtful individuals, capable of leading in any scenario. Moving from the theoretical to the practical, and employing real-world examples, author Jennifer Garvey Berger offers a set of building blocks to help cultivate an agile workforce while improving performance.

Coaches, HR professionals, thoughtful leaders, and anyone who wants to flourish on the job will find this book a vital resource for developing their own capacities and those of the talent that they support.

Review
"Helping leaders grow to meet the challenges of today's business environment is a project that has been taken up by many writers. Our world is complex and it presents many risks and threats, and it gives rise to behavior that is aggressive or defensive, self-interested, and frequently destructive. The question is whether it is possible for people to develop beyond such behavior. Berger's book offers a practical answer by providing a developmental framework for learning and an approach to guiding people towards more empowering forms of thinking . . . The key question is: how do people develop from one stage of thinking to the next? How do they change their view of the world and their way of thinking? The great value of Berger's book is that this is the central focus. Having presented examples of situations where different modes of thinking lead to conflict, she walks the reader through processes that can help to bring the differences in thinking to the surface, and thereby make room for new approaches. And perhaps this is the most important work that needs to be done in workplaces."—Glenn Martin, Journal of Spirituality, Leadership, and Management

"A significant contribution towards re-imagining how we go about developing leaders. Jennifer invites leaders and those of us engaged in developing leaders to be more precise in our support and to think anew about the role that organizational context plays. This book calls on us to become more capable, agile, and better aligned with the increasing complexity of a global economy, while showing us how to stitch together an approach to our work that is fit for this task."—Sally DeWitt Miller, Director, Leadership Development Group, Microsoft Corporation

"People have been asking for years, 'Where can I go for a rich, practical, and incisive guide to the relationship between adult-developmental theory and coaching?' Now there is an answer. You are holding it, and when you start reading it, it will hold you."—Robert Kegan, Meehan Professor of Adult Learning and Professional Development, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, author of In Over Our Heads, and co-author of Immunity to Change

"What are the three hardest things in the world to do? How about: 1) transform the culture you're part of; 2) transform a meeting or conversation you're in; and 3) transform your own mind? Want to learn how? A great way to begin is to read Jennifer Garvey Berger's Changing on the Job and begin looking at your own work/life through the lenses she provides."—Bill Torbert, Boston College Leadership Professor Emeritus and Director of Research, Harthill Consulting Ltd.

"In increasingly complex times, it really matters that more people are able to think in complex ways. Jennifer Garvey Berger shows how we can change and grow, as adults and leaders, to better handle complexity in all aspects of our lives and work. The ideas in this book are critically important and Jennifer presents them as a compelling story."—Robyn Baker, CEO, New Zealand Council for Educational Research
"Destined to become a classic in the field, this is quite simply the best book on leadership and adult development out there. In addition to offering the clearest explication of adult development theory, this book breaks much needed ground in applying the deep insights of theory to practice, and in offering numerous suggestions for working with leaders to expand and transform their ability to cope with complexity. Managers, HR professionals, coaches and others involved in helping leaders grow to meet the demands of our day will greatly benefit from reading this book. So will their clients!"—William H. Hodgetts, Ed.D., Vice President of Enterprise Talent, Fidelity Investments
"Buckle up—your world is about to change. Garvey Berger's groundbreaking work at the intersection of adult development, coaching, leadership development, and organizational change have transformed my thinking, practice, and impact. Here, Jennifer makes her astonishing insights readily available to practitioners, managers, and theorists alike—just in time for the needs of our complex world."—Mark Leach, Management Assistance Group

Changing complexity and leadership on the job: So what?
By Steven Michael Carpenter
Jennifer Garvey Berger has a clear and distinct voice. The larger discourse that this book tackles -- complexity, constructive developmentalism (CD), and their application to leadership -- speaks to a wide range of debate amongst a wider range of readers. The author leverages her experience in the constructive development world in a way that those who are not experts will be educated. She uses the context of CD theory to lay the groundwork for applying the concepts of complexity, coaching, and change in today's work environment.

The book is well organized into three parts; Growing complexity, where she sets the context and backstory; Helping others grow, where she addresses how individuals grow differently and how to work within that individualism; and Changing on the job, where she applies the developmental theories to leadership within the workplace and within the structure of organizations.

Jennifer's style is straight-forward and easy to comprehend. If you are a novice to CD theory, she will intrigue your interest. If you are graduate student or CD practitioner, you will find new insight about applications and developments in change and leadership theory. The most compelling aspect of her book for me has been her ability to make sense of complex theory in a practical, pragmatic application. Most specifically, Jennifer asks the most important question that should be asked of any theory, and applies that to her work, "So what?" Jennifer is critical of CD theory, of her own application of the theory to the workplace, and it is this critical view that makes here work more valuable in that it is practical and applicable.

Transformational Leadership
By mnomalley
I don't know where to start. I got so much out of this thoughtful, beautifully written book. Importantly, it provides a comprehensive definition of what it means to be a transformational leader (referred to as self-transforming in the book): in the way they think, take action, and interact with others. Additionally, I appreciated the balanced treatment in that Garvey-Berger doesn't assume that a high level of thought necessarily translates into better leadership since, like everyone, even transformational leaders have their blindspots and have to deal with people who are dissimilar -- and not all goes smoothly. Above all else, the author provides leaders and coaches with guidance on how to develop and function more fully and expansively on the job, in meetings, and in any other endeavor where people are called upon to work harmoniously and productively together. This is a one-of-a-kind book that is a prototype for what business writing should be. Michael O'Malley, author of Leading with Kindness; The Wisdom of Bees; and Every Leader is an Artist (forthcoming).

Applying Systems Thinking to Coaching
By factoid junkie
The majority of leadership development still focuses on competence and seldom advances to higher order ways of thinking and being a leader. Many development cycles contain a series of activities or instructional periods (both in-house or staged at a university) that provide overviews of system-thinking. I know many a mid to senior level leader who can use terms like "systemic difficulties," ""unintended consequences," or "strategic ambiguity" without demonstrating how to use this level of thinking or communicating on the job.

The author provides us a practical and helpful look at how to coach against a familiar, but well developed theory of mind (mental stages) that helps individuals actually think in complex terms, not just use the terms conversationally. I believe the leadership development community is better at coaching individuals to move from self-authoring to self-transforming than we are at teaching them (in an instructional manner). Current teaching models and normal maturation allow many to reach self-authoring, but the paucity of available self-transforming exemplars means many plateau at self-authoring.

The author encourages a focus on listening to a manager's symbolic lines of reasoning (metaphor and story) as a way to map mental boundaries. Helping leaders communicate complexity through better stories and metaphor is the traveling companion to helping them think and calculate strategically.

A terrific book for those genuinely interested in helping maturing managers up their game to a more complex plane.

Focused Worship
By Jo
I was so pleased to receive this book for our children. I have been making up church papers for my own children for years, so I was excited to get new ideas. Instead of doing the same thing each week, there are several different ideas for keeping your children focused on the preaching: Scripture Scribe has them writing out the Scripture passages that are read, Key Word Alphabet has them listening for key words to go with each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, Key Word Search allows you to write down words that you think they might hear in the sermon and they add tally marks each time they hear the word, Sermon Illustrator gives three boxes for "drawing" the sermon, and there are several more options to choose from. There is also a Prayer Meeting sheet which gives the children an opportunity to have their own prayer list for our Wednesday prayer meeting. There is a Missionary Moments sheet for when missionaries come through your church and your children can record what they learned about the missionary and their country. Using SNFK has also revealed to me which children need to work on staying alert to the message the whole way through. Jill has done an excellent job in putting together a fun way for children to stay focused in church.

I bought this for my 3 boys ages 10, 11, and 12. They enjoy church more with something to keep their attention on the sermon. It also gives us a way to discuss the sermon after church and allow them to ask questions. I LOVE this book.

The Way of the Cell: Molecules, Organisms, and the Order of Life, by Franklin M. Harold

What is life? Fifty years after physicist Erwin Schrodinger posed this question in his celebrated and inspiring book, the answer remains elusive. In The Way of the Cell, one of the world's most respected microbiologists draws on his wide knowledge of contemporary science to provide fresh insight into this intriguing and all-important question.
What is the relationship of living things to the inanimate realm of chemistry and physics? How do lifeless but special chemicals come together to form those intricate dynamic ensembles that we recognize as life? To shed light on these questions, Franklin Harold focuses here on microorganisms--in particular, the supremely well-researched bacterium E. coli--because the cell is the simplest level of organization that manifests all the features of the phenomenon of life. Harold shows that as simple as they appear when compared to ourselves, every cell displays a dynamic pattern in space and time, orders of magnitude richer than its elements. It integrates the writhings and couplings of billions of molecules into a coherent whole, draws matter and energy into itself, constructs and reproduces its own order, and persists in this manner for numberless generations while continuously adapting to a changing world.
A cell constitutes a unitary whole, a unit of life, and in this volume one of the leading authorities on the cell gives us a vivid picture of what goes on within this minute precinct. The result is a richly detailed, meticulously crafted account of what modern science can tell us about life as well as one scientist's personal attempt to wring understanding from the tide of knowledge.

Amazon.com Review
"What is life?" asked physicist Edwin Schrödinger in an influential essay by that title published half a century ago. In this book, Franklin Harold ventures no definitive answers about what he calls "the supreme marvel of the universe." Instead, with wit and learning, he surveys the advances in scientific understanding about the nature of life since Schrödinger's time.

Harold focuses closely on microorganisms, which, he observes, do not often figure in popular books of biology, perhaps because most general readers associate them only with disease and not with their many beneficial contributions to the world's workings. In fact, he suggests, the answer to Schrödinger's question is likely to be found at the microscopic level. Current evolutionary models derived from the study of ribosomal RNA from hundreds of species of plants and animals now point to the development of life from some cenancestor in a setting billions of years old, one in which "microorganisms rather than dinosaurs fill the horizon." The identity of that ancestor is not yet known, he writes; it may have resembled a bacterium, or it may have been a loosely organized assemblage of protocells "engaged in the promiscuous exchange of genetic information."

No matter what it looked like, Harold notes in this instructive survey of modern biological theory, life probably originated in an apparently inhospitable environment, as studies of deep-ocean thermal vents and the lithosphere now point to, rather than in the oceanic "chemical stew" of old. It's a fascinating story, and Harold tells it ably. --Gregory McNamee

From Booklist
Nothing concentrates the mind like tackling the largest of questions (What is life?) within the smallest of settings (the cell). In achieving this concentration, Harold invites general readers to join him on the very frontier of biological research, there to ponder the multilayered dynamics of the animate world. Though technical enough to discourage the casual browser, this explication of the inner workings of a humble bacterium initiates readers in just enough science to permit a serious engagement with fundamental theoretical questions: Where, for instance, does a strictly genetic approach to life lead us astray? Or, why must we invoke autopoiesis--and not just natural selection--in explaining biological order? Nonspecialists will find themselves richly rewarded for a little patience in following the careful and lucid answers to these and other fundamental questions. For Harold has cleared a path deep into the perplexities now confronting biological theorists. And with rare candor, he acknowledges when those perplexities push us to the limit of science, leaving us to wonder and guess. A work of marvelous penetration and scope. Bryce Christensen

Superb natural philosophy of life with very current science
By Todd I. Stark
This is an excellent book of detailed biological philosophy that is often a sheer delight to read. I guess the best comparison I can think of off the top of my head is to Lewis Thomas' thought provoking "Lives of a Cell," but with extremely current science. This is particularly welcome in these days when we are being inundated with the pros and cons of genetics, the emphasis here is off of the genome itself and onto its role in constructing the cell and bringing life into being.
The cell is, to put it simply, the basic unit of life. This beautifully written book investigates the principles of what science knows about the cell, and also their limits. In so doing, it also investigates much of what we know about life. While it gets very detailed at times, it is still quite readable by educated non-specialists.
"Way of the Cell" makes judicious and consistent use of current state of the art principles such as self-organization, self-assembly, and the dynamics of far from equillibrium reactions, yet it doesn't get carried away with them. This book remains solidly rooted to science throughout, even when it probes the boundaries of what we know of the complex processes in living cells.
We are treated to several very interesting, measured, and contemporary accounts of the relationship of form and function, and how cells construct themselves. The author is very much a lyrical poet of nature philosophy as well as a serious biochemist. There are also a number of insights into the history and critical observations of biological science, but the book never becomes history-heavy. It is always foremost a book of wonderment at what science tells us about life.
There is a unique discussion of the origins of life, concluding that the answer lies in the utterly remote past, but with remarkable candor admitting that without novel and powerful methods of historical inquiry, we soon reach a limit to what we can discover about it with much certainty. This is followed by an epilogue about the meaning of life, and the author's personal view that science must remain silent on matters of morality.
This is a book that brings evolution, thermodynamics, information theory, developmental biology, cell biology, and genetics into close and comfortable conjunction, and even a fair degree of synthesis in spots. There are many profound insights here to be gleaned, and even more distinctive new perspectives on old ideas. There is an awful lot of "new wine in old bottles" here in the way the authors approach each topic. There are very few extremes or excessive claims here to criticize, it just all fits together wonderfully.
This is a book that will be particularly appreciated by those who enjoy Lynn Margulis' "system" perspective on organisms, but I think it should be read by anyone interested in deep questions of the nature of life from the perspective of science.

Difficult, profound; worth the reader's best efforts
By Dennis Littrell
Time and again in this dense, intensely scientific exposition on cellular life, Professor Harold expresses his dissatisfaction with what he calls the "genocentric" view of life. Instead he would like to see a "focus on the cellular templet rather than the molecular gene." He believes this would represent "a significant divergence from the genocentric conception of life that now dominates the scientific literature and even more so, the popular press." (p. 100) Harold makes a strong case for his point of view; indeed, it is this book more than any other that has made me see the overriding influence the immediate molecular environment has on reproduction and growth.
The genome has its "recipe," its code of instructions, but what Harold is at pains to tell us is that without the four-dimensional cellular environment in which the gene's "instructions" are carried out in a step-by-step process, there would be no growth or reproduction.
What this means is that the shape and temperature, the position and abundance of the surrounding cellular elements themselves shape the genetic expression as much as or even more than the genome. All life comes from life. All cells come from cells. There is no acting out of the genetic code outside a cellular environment.
And so we see Harold's frustration and that of other molecular biologists at all the hoopla that has accompanied the sequencing of the genome when it is clear that reading the code is just a very small step toward understanding how the cell reproduces itself and grows. What we need to understand is the intricate environment of the cell and how it interacts with the code leading to the epigenetic assembly of the cell and ultimately of the organism. The complications inherent in such an enterprise are truly mind-boggling in the extreme. Analysis of the four-dimensional factors would overwhelm the fastest computers in existence--all of them at the same time--if somehow we could figure out how to employ them to aid our analysis.
These facts explain why scientists like Harold are insistent upon a holistic approach to biology and why they again and again warn about the limitations of a reductionist approach. Life is just too complicated to be understood by breaking it down into pieces and attempting to put it back together, or to reverse engineer it.
On page 213 there is an interesting comparison of E. O. Wilson's view that there is "progress" in evolution and Stephen J. Gould's emphatic view that there is not. Harold seems to be implying that because organisms have become more complex that there is indeed at least "direction" in evolution. I would go further than this and observe that the rise of complex culture-bearing organisms like humans, who may be able to protect their home planet from a death-dealing meteor, implies if not "progress" in evolution, something equally agreeable. However, I would not say that our rise was inevitable. Indeed, along with Gould I would call it a contingency.
Much of the book, especially chapters three through eight, is a technical exploration of the microbial world of the cell using concepts and terminology not readily accessible to the lay reader. Harold is aware of this, at least for Chapter 4, "Molecular Logic," where he writes on page 35, "...students of biochemistry will find little in [the chapter]...that is new to them, but for the layman it may be like sipping water from a firehose." (!) Professor Harold provides a glossary, but one suspects one is out of one's depth when the words searched for are not in the glossary, but can be found in an ordinary dictionary!
Nonetheless the broad outlines of Harold's message can be discerned without appreciating fully the intricacies of cell metabolism and development. The introductory chapters, "Schrödinger's Riddle" and "The Quality of Life" explore the question that physicist Erwin Schrödinger famously asked in his much admired little book, What Is Life? (1944), a book that very much impressed the young Franklin Harold. In the closing chapters, beginning with Chapter 9 "By Descent with Modification," and especially the engaging Chapter 10 "So What is Life?", Harold looks more generally at evolution. He touches on the new science of complexity and how it relates to biology, and on the thermodynamics of ecosystems and how that affects natural selection. His treatment of some of the controversies in evolutionary theory is both illuminating and balanced, so much so that one would like to quote whole passages. This is obviously a subject Professor Harold has thought long and hard about for many years. Here are some examples of his thought:
"...[F]orm is not directly or rigidly determined by the genotype: the genes define a range within which the phenotype falls, but forms arise epigenetically as the result of developmental processes." (p. 209)
"Organisms are historical creatures, the products of evolution; we should not expect to deduce all their properties from universal laws." (p. 218)
"What we lack is an understanding of the principles that ultimately make living organisms living, and in their absence we cannot hope to integrate the phenomenon of life into the familiar framework of physical law. I am not here to advocate a veiled vitalism, nor to sneak in a creator by the back door. But...until we have forged rational links between the several domains of science, our understanding of life will remain incomplete and even superficial." (p. 218)
"...[W]hile a machine implies a machine maker, an organism is a self-organizing entity." (p. 220)
"Organisms process matter and energy as well as information; each represents a dynamic node in a whirlpool of several currents, and self-reproduction is a property of the collective, not of genes.... DNA is a peculiar sort of software, that can only be correctly interpreted by its own unique hardware.... [S]ending aliens the genome of a cat is no substitute for sending the cat itself--complete with mice." (p. 221)

Eloquent tribute to the mystique of Biology.
By Luigi Fernandez
The way of the cell is the way of life, for the cell is the structural unit of all living organisms on Earth. And Franklin Harold comes close to defining life in a manner that is all-encompassing, concise, and eloquent. Any person who has taken a Biology class should not have a problem with the book, although many times the author uses terminology that does not get defined at the same time, in which case, the reader has to have a good background in Cell Biology or has to browse the glossary.
Harold's eloquence is remarkable. Consider the following quotes:
1. "Over time functional systems would have "crystallized" into successful configurations, and therefore become less receptive to the import of novelty..."
2. "The genetic free-trade zone fragmented into protected enclaves, not abruptly but gradually on a time-scale of millions of years..."
3. "...leaving a huge lacuna in any account of cell evolution, but fostering a crop of stimulating conjectures."
4. "Molecular phylogenists, who draw their opinions from the bedrock of gene sequences, view the matter somewhat differently but still in a glass, darkly."
5. "The better part of valor may be to sit tight and await the tide of new data, but only dullards are proof against the temptations of myth-making."
6. "There is a fine air of whimsy, about those imaginative tales ...They also stop insouciantly around patches of quicksand, such as what brought about early cellular fusions that are not permitted to contemporary prokaryotes..."
7. "The profusion that came after is built like a fugue upon the deep theme of eukaryotic order."
8. "On the outer banks of science, one often suspects that the believer is happy while the doubter is wise; and yet, too critical a spirit is apt to overlook the genuine contribution that complexity studies have already made."
9. "The rocky path from RNA replicators to DNA genes and from catalytic RNA to protein enzymes calls for stout boots and a good head for heights."
This makes for engrossing reading, as the mystique of Biology can be overlooked when the text is dry and scholarly. There is delight, however, in reading Harold, similar to what the reader can get from Stephen Jay Gould, Richard Dawkins, and Stuart Kauffman, to name a few. I can imagine Harold entertaining his audience in a seminar with his penchant for combining words elegantly.
Today I was in a seminar where a famous molecular biologist (also a cancer biologist) admitted to a sabotage against the reductionist agenda as more scientists begin to realize that life processes cannot be just explained by the panoply of bioorganic molecules, proteins especially, and the genes that encode them. Harold fiercely stresses that DNA, for all the glorification that it deserves, is not all there is. New properties emerge as biological molecules find themselves in different cellular compartments and environments, at different stages in the development of the organism, and as the organisms themselves explore all possibilities of trading and swapping genes, and even fusing their entire bodies in one. Read this book, and be enveloped by the biological mystique!
