Adaptive Thermal Comfort: Principles and Practice, by Fergus Nicol, Michael Humphreys, Susan Roaf

The fundamental function of buildings is to provide safe and healthy shelter. For the fortunate they also provide comfort and delight. In the twentieth century comfort became a 'product' produced by machines and run on cheap energy. In a world where fossil fuels are becoming ever scarcer and more expensive, and the climate more extreme, the challenge of designing comfortable buildings today requires a new approach.

This timely book is the first in a trilogy from leaders in the field which will provide just that. It explains, in a clear and comprehensible manner, how we stay comfortable by using our bodies, minds, buildings and their systems to adapt to indoor and outdoor conditions which change with the weather and the climate. The book is in two sections. The first introduces the principles on which the theory of adaptive thermal comfort is based. The second explains how to use field studies to measure thermal comfort in practice and to analyze the data gathered.

Architects have gradually passed responsibility for building performance to service engineers who are largely trained to see comfort as the ‘product’, designed using simplistic comfort models. The result has contributed to a shift to buildings that use ever more energy. A growing international consensus now calls for low-energy buildings. This means designers must first produce robust, passive structures that provide occupants with many opportunities to make changes to suit their environmental needs. Ventilation using free, natural energy should be preferred and mechanical conditioning only used when the climate demands it.

This book outlines the theory of adaptive thermal comfort that is essential to understand and inform such building designs. This book should be required reading for all students, teachers and practitioners of architecture, building engineering and management – for all who have a role in producing, and occupying, twenty-first century adaptive, low-carbon, comfortable buildings.

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in thermal comfort research and looking to learn more about conducting a field study with test subjects. The book effectively describes the current state of thermal comfort research, including thorough citations, and recommendations for research methods and analysis. As a young researcher in this field, I refer to this book for reference in statistical modeling and recommendations for field studies. Humphreys and Nicol have been researching thermal comfort for decades and their wealth of knowledge is evident in this publication.

First of its kind. Worth its weight in gold.
By Jagmohan Pankaj Saigal
Someone wrote the first and only review, giving a "5-Star" rating, and writing these three words "It is ok." I simply could not hold myself and I wrote a comment on that review.

It seems that, I as an Electric Power Engineer (now retired) owe it to the author that I should express my genuine feelings and thoughts about this uniquely wonderful, really great, exceptionally useful, First-one of its kind, destined to be the most respectable textbook as well as the reference book for the Electrical/Mechanical Engineers who design and manufacture not only the Electric Motors, but any electric machine. As a matter of fact, the event of publication of this book should have been hailed as the first one of the most significant publications in the entire history of manufacturing of Electrical Power Machines.

If amazon.com had a rating system which went from "1-star" to "100-Stars", I would have chosen "200-stars"! Ever since i graduated with my
B. S.(EE) and B.S. (ME) (in 1962-63), I have fallen in love with Electric Machines. I taught EE for 7 & 1/2 years, came to U.S.A. to earn my
M.S. (EE) in 1971-1973 (while I was working full time with a consulting company). But the love for Electric Machines was inspired by two wonderful teachers: one was Mr. "B. P. K". in India who introduced me to "Tensors" and to the works of Dr. Gabriel Kron, and the other was Prof. Dr. Jerome Meisel at the Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Meisel has authored a wonderful textbook, "Principles of Electromechanical - Energy Conversion" which was published by McGraw-Hill Book Company in 1966.

I am fully aware that the reader of this review is not at all interested in knowing about a part of my "autobiography", he really wants to know about the book being reviewed. I apologize for being long-worded, but I just wanted to give you my credentials for reviewing this book.

I wish I had a much better and bigger vocabulary and a really good command in English language to praise this unique, most probably the First book of its kind. The author has done a singularly great service to the entire Electrical Power Engineering Community by writing this book. It is probably the most important publication which is destined to be the First and the Best reference book for the Electrical (Power) Engineers and Mechanical Engineers dealing not only with Electrical Motors but any Electric Power Machine. The author deserves a few good awards from the well-known Institutions; certainly from IEEE and other Big name Institutions, as well as from the World-Class Big and Famous Companies (such as G.E., and Asea Brown-Bovery - to name a few) manufacturing Electrical Motors. I will not be surprised to see additional awards coming from big Universities.. It is a wonder that no professor or/and practicing Electrical/Mechanical Engineer has written a review of this great book. I feel very sad about the state in which the Electrical (Power) Engineers have sunk! I also feel sad and angry at the apathy of the E. P. Engineers. and the professors! I feel as if I am crying in the wilderness! This great book was published in 2014, and until today, there was a "5-Stars", three words -long review!

This is a 702+ page long book. It has 12 chapters, with an excellent list of the references at the end of each chapter. The publisher's summary: "Focused on the design, analysis, construction, optimization, and applications of electric motors, this book can be used for regular or advanced mechanical engineering courses. Mechanical Design of Electric Motors offers research results based on the personal experience of the author as well as significant research contribution of others. It provides mechanical engineers and students in(/)of energy conversion industries with comprehensive design techniques and practical approaches in the design of electric motors."

From the preface, in the Author's words: " ........most available books on electric motors in the market focus primarily on electromagnetic design rather than mechanical design. After a long unsuccessful search, one day I was suddenly struck with a thought: Why not write this book myself? This thought has inspired me to embark on the arduous task of compiling recent developments and advances in the mechanical design of electric motors into one book."

"........ the design, development, and implementation of modern electric motors still pose challenges for motor engineers and designers. This is because they involve a wide variety of disciplines, such as mechanics, electromagnetics, electronics, fluid and solid dynamics, heat transfer, material science, tribology, acoustics, control theory, manufacturing technologies, and engineering economics, to name a few. ......."

The author's name is Dr. Wei Tong. He "... currently serves as Chief Engineer at Kollmorgen Corporation, a subsidiary of Danaher Corporation. ....
Dr. Tong received his PhD. from the University of Minnesota in 1989 and MBA from State University of New York at Albany in 1999. ............ "

I am writing this review (it has taken some time and effort), because as an Electrical Power Engineer (now retired), I have a moral and ethical duty, and privilege to thank the author and applaud his book as much as I can. May he forgive the persons who should have reviewed and lavishly praised the book and its author. The great pioneering Electrical/Mechanical Engineers in the late 19th. century to all the great engineers today and the coming decades will be proud of Dr. Tong and his book.

I would like to recommend the author, the publisher, and the agents to develop and execute a plan to publish a relatively inexpensive, but a good quality (preferably a Hardcover) edition of this book for sale in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and similar countries where this can be bought by many EE/ME. At the listed current price, only a few universities there may be willing to buy this book.

I hope you will read this review completely, and agree with me. This book is worth its weight in gold.

Meet classic comic-strip character Big Nate - The Boy with the Biggest Head in the World - as he stars in his own super-funny series. Big Nate is created by Lincoln Peirce, who inspired Jeff Kinney, author of 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'. Big-head Nate Wright truly believes he is destined for greatness! He's a table tennis champ, a genius comic book artist and the self-proclaimed king of his class. One school morning, Nate barely survives his Dad's toxic porridge before rushing off to school, forgetting his lunch. He thinks he has a test and he hasn't studied for it! Nate's class notes are full of doodles but sadly lacking any useful information...On the way to school he accidentally body slams his head teacher, then, during his first lesson of the day, he manages to insult his least favourite teacher, Mrs. Godfrey (aka Godzilla). But a little thing like having-the-worst-day-ever won't hold back The Boy with the Biggest Head in the World!

Rip off!!!
By Jon F. Mabry
This book is the SAME book at "Big Nate, in a Class by Himself" but it has a different title. We already have that book and my son had read it. We assumed this was a different book since the title is different, but it is NOT, it is the EXACT same book, with a different title. How was anyone to know that???? Now we have purchased the SAME book we have already read!! so, if you have read "Big Nate, a Class by Himself" DO NOT waste your money ON THIS one.

I can't believe the author would put out two books that are exactly the same but just have a different title! The Boy With the Biggest Head is the exact same book as Big Nate In a Class by Himself. This almost seems fraudulant. Amazon should stop selling this book!

Waste of money!!!!
By mlarmsby
This was such a waste of money!!! My son loves these books and when he started to read the book he said, "Mom this is the same book as the first one, but it has a different title." I took both books side by side and looked through the pages and compared them. Sure enough they were exactly the same book. My son and I were both disappointed.

If you have any interest in how effective your acupuncture may be, in carrying out research, or in supporting the ever-growing momentum of the acupuncture research movement, this book is an essential vade-mecum. Do read it. David F. Mayor, Clinical Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

Practitioners of Chinese medicine, teachers, students, researchers, and health policy makers alike will benefit form reading this stimulating collection of essays. Highly recommended! Velia Wortman, Anglo-Dutch Institute for Oriental Medicine, Duinlust, Overveen, the Netherlands

For acupuncturists
By Billy A.
This should be a must read for every acupuncture student near graduation. The front part it's a slow read, highly technical if you aren't a neurologist, but still worth getting through. It has a few good tidbits that will be used in my practice, but especially it gives context to what kinds of research is being done and why.

The Science of Acupuncture
By Anthony F. Jahn
This is a useful adjunct to the pocket text by Stux and Pomerantz, but does not stand alone as a text for acupuncture. I would recommend it as a secondary text for those who already have one of the standard clinical texts, such as Deadman or Macciocia.

I read this book over 20 years ago and glad to find a copy on Amazon. If you are really interested in scientific knowledge of how acupuncture works, it is a good book for you. Remember: the book is not for leisure reading. it is a biomedical plus acupuncture based reference book. Enjoy!
