This is an excellent supplement but be warned it is rich with Wonderland lore and the average enthusiast will probably be lost on where much of it comes from as it seems the writers were definitely well versed. An excellent read though as they do a great job of marrying the Savage Worlds system to the nonsense that makes Wonderland everything that it is.

In his latest novel, Gaiman (Neverwhere) explores the vast and bloody landscape of myths and legends where the gods of yore and the neoteric gods of now conflict in modern-day America. The antihero, a man of unusually acute intellect through whose eyes we witness the behind-the-scenes dynamics of human religion and faith, is a convict called Shadow. He is flung into the midst of a supernatural fray of gods such as Odin, Anansi, Loki One-Eye, Thor, and a multitude of other ancient divinities as they struggle for survival in an America beset by trends, fads, and constant upheaval an environment not good for gods. They are joined in this struggle by such contemporary deities as the geek-boy god Internet and the goddess Media. There's a nice plot twist in the end, and the fascinating subject matter and impressive mythic scope are handled creatively and expertly. American Style Ragnarok

Neil Gaiman is a fiction author that speaks to me in a non fictional way. Not only does he crank out a good story with a stellar cast of characters but also manages to insert several metaphysical truths. I kind of like to rank him among Chaos magicians and other enlightened Pagan. He has done his reading even if it is not apparent at first.

Shadow is pulling time in prison for some violent crime . He is accompanied by some dude named Low Key (Loki). He figures later in the story. In any case an early release is granted after his wife Laura and his boss die in a traffick accident. A stranger named Wednesday offered him a job. Wednesday is really Ofin and he has a really big job for Shadow. A new set of gods is trying to muscle in. They are technology gods and they want to keep the same pattern but they want to introduce a new paradigm. Shadow goes on a slew of adventures, some with Egyptian gods and deities from other pantheons. A great war is about to come about. The tech gods are worried for their positions as well because once the gods are forgotten they lose their power and whither away. Things climaxed on a hill called Rocl City. Along the way Shadow solves crimes and meets a vast assortment of characters. He solves murders, reconnects with old friend.

But I'm the end Odin and Loki have a plan. Elements are pulled from the mythology and are plugged in quite well to the story. The story and the book are great. I found the additional excerpts a bit painful and boring to read after the story was finished. A must read.

Always a Thrilling Ride

I came to this party about 15 years late but just in time for the highly anticipated television series. I held high expectations about loving this book based on the way my friends raved about it as well as my own experience loving every other Neil Gaiman book I’ve read. About halfway through I was disappointed because I was not loving it as much has I had hoped. It didn’t take much time for this feeling to turn completely around in the final third.

Mr. Gaiman’s books always make me think. With each new scene I wonder how this could possibly fit in the grand scheme he has crafted. This book jumped around in both time and place which I found difficult to piece together at times. By the end each and every scene I had thought was unnecessary or confusing came into focus.

One thing I can always count on from Neil Gaiman is his ability to lead and push me through his story without knowing where I am going or why each scene is important. Yet, in the end I am always fully satisfied with the tale’s conclusion and that all my confusion has cleared and my questions have been answered. What he constructs in the plot is only half the fun. The feeling that I am a full participant completes the adventure.

Definitely read this book!

This might be the best book I have ever read. I read a lot, and many books make me feel as though anyone could be a writer, but when I read books my Neil Gaiman I realize that anyone can write, but it takes a special someone to write well. I won't try to describe the plot, because every time I make this book sound hokey and I really under sell it. I will just say that this book caught be my surprise, but for the careful reader there is plenty of foreshadowing that gives you the last second hint at what is going on.

I love that Mr. Gaiman has tweaked this book since its first edition, because it implies to me that he also loved this book and wanted to continue to improve it. Books are weird, in that once they are published, that is usually it. Reality, however, continues to shift, and time continues to move. It is kind of cool that this book has continued to grow.

If you are a fan of Mr. Gaiman's other work, this won't disappoint. He is a phenomenal author and I highly recommend this book.

Corrections

The description includes a couple of errors: Piazzolla's instrument was the bandoneon, a type of button accordian. These piano duos arrangements were written by Pablo Ziegler, who played piano in Piazzolla's "nuevo tango" groups in the 70s and 80s.

I bought this collection for the arrangement of "Libertango". I've performed it often with another pianist and audiences love it. If you've got a sense of rhythm (and can read the notation), you'll enjoy it also.

There are several recordings of this arrangement on Youtube.com.

This is one of my favorite pieces of Piazzolla. This book will enable me to create my own dual pianos on my digital recorder. Now I can play it AND enjoy it. Amazon, as always, has never failed to take excellent care of me.

A Timeless Classic

The first chapter in this book, alone, makes this a classic for understanding how social problems are dealt with in our individualistic ideological society. His formula for "Blaming the Victim" covers just a couple of pages but is than intellectually expounded upon in this book by analyzing various social problems. Some may consider William Ryan an ideologue; however, I find him to be a practical fellow. He doesn't view the formula for "Blaming the Victim" as inherently evil as some radicals might - he simply finds it as the root cause for not solving social problems in our society. If the root cause of a social problem is the social structure, yet we seek to solve the social problem through, strictly, rehabilitation of the individual, the social problem is left unsolved.
I have taught several classes on poverty, social problems and social welfare and am able to utilize Ryan's book in all of these classes. His presentation is put forward in a common-sense manner, and he provides a rational refutation on commonly held beliefs on problems ranging from poverty to child abuse. This is a book worth getting if for no other reason to reevaluate how we look at problems and more importantly how to go about solving them.

Fix the social arrangments that make weaknesses crippling

Everyone has weaknesses. In the best of circumstances these flaws are inconsequential and invisible. But when we are in distress, they get in the way or cause outright harm.
Institutions and customary social arrangements can ease the causes of distress. If we create institutions that alleviate people's predicaments, their flaws and weaknesses do not surface. As a demonstration on a relatively small scale, consider Milton Mazer, People and Predicaments.
The issue here is not welfare, in the sense of labor-free livelihood. Everyone knows only the most wealthy deserve that. Think public transportation that works. Think medical care. Think intervention into abuse. Think Head Start, an enormous success for very little money. Think paying teachers commensurately to their training and their contribution to society.
Our institutions and customary social arrangements benefit some people more than others. It's an obvious but oddly ignored truth that those benefited most are least aware of it. That's just the way life is for them, so it must be so for everyone. Consequently, it seems to them that another's unsuccess must be due to a failure of intention or even to willful parasitism.
This is what Ryan identifies as blaming the victim.
Does "destructive behavior underpin poverty" or does institutionalized poverty expose and amplify human frailty with destructive consequences? The question is, if you want to change matters, what is effective. Shaking one's finger and instructing people in proper values has never had much effect. To say that failure is due to ineradicable character flaws obviously goes nowhere, unless to euthanasia.
The proposition that the poor are "held back by lack of work ethic and strong family values" is profoundly insulting to the vast majority of working poor who work very hard indeed. (Consider Ehrenreich's experience, reported in Nickel and Dimed.)
The defense of Banfield by the second reviewer, couched as an attack on "Ryan and his ilk", is of only historical relevance to Ryan's book today. I do agree that framing the issues in racial terms is a weakness of the book. The problem reaches farther and deeper than either its ethnic or ethical physiognomy suggests. Consider Z. Harris, The Transformation of Capitalist Society.

Better than THE TIPPING POINT

This concise book is superior to Malcolm Gladwell's best-seller, The Tipping Point. Gladwell's popular book was based on an appealingly superficial premise: that a trend spreads like a disease, multiplying geometrically until it reaches a population "tipping point," whereafter it increases to epidemic proportions. While that handy metaphor describes how a trend spreads, it doesn't really explain why, nor does it explain why one phenomenon becomes an enduring trend while another becomes just a mere short-lived fad. Unlike Gladwell, who is a journalist, Vejlgaard is a trained social scientist. Like an epidemiologist, he examines modern trends under a microscope, discovering the source of their unique power. He detects, moreover, a traceable and predictable pattern that all true trends tend to follow. An especially valuable book for professionals in advertising, marketing, and product development, and for all the rest of us who want to better understand the material forces that shape our lives.

Moderate; but by no means spectacular

Having read Gladwell's Tipping Point I turned to Anatomy of a Trend for a more academically rigourous approach to the study of trend diffusion. I'm sad to say that this book most certainly didn't meet expectations. Written in much the same pop-sociology/psychology tone as Gladwell, Vejlgaard supports his central argument with rudimentary psychology theories such as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and the Big 5 Personality Index. There is the occasional interesting idea but nothing the you can take away or apply in the real world. Most of the book is supported by lengthy examples which also happen to appear in The Tipping Point like the Hush Puppies or Harley Davidson. If you occasion upon this book in a library then you might get it out, but as for forking over money for it - think carefully and definitely don't but this book in a double deal with The Tipping Point. They are practically the same. Nevertheless, it's a fairly easy read if you have a spare couple of hours and are really interested in this stuff.

I have been looking for a text much like this since I left college a while. I loved the subject matter in my Industrial Engineering courses and lately have been able to apply the principles in my professional career. This book kept away from the heavy math and got right into the tools; which assuming you don't need to understand the math in depth allows for forward movement quickier.
