This is a "must have" reference for all history buffs!

I ran across the first edition of this book over 25 years ago while in high school and still consider it one of my most valued references. The current edition covers the history of warfare up to 1985, and a new edition would be great, but it is still an incredible resource. Every battle of any significance from the dawn of recorded history is represented by an entry, 99 of which are accompanied by a small map. The battles are listed in alphabetical order, but the author helpfully lists the chronologically preceding and following battle of a campaign or war at the end of each entry, so that you can easily place each battle in its historical context. There are also separate entries for each war which lists all the battles for which there is an entry in the book. The individual battle descriptions are sometimes terse and lacking detail, but for the most part, the key strategic, political, and tactical issues are addressed. Summaries of losses in personnel and equipment are usually included. But don't get the impression that this is a dry, boring tome of dates and statistics! This book is a great pleasure to read. Each vignette is well-written and often includes the fascinating little tibits of humanity that make the history of man's terrible penchant for conflict such a compelling subject of study.

As Handy as It Gets

This is a nice battle dictionary, from the most ancient times to 1984, with special attention to US involvement but every battle with any major importance is included. It's a basic introductory work and the level of detail is somewhat low, so anyone looking for intensive reference, especially if interested in the purely military aspects, should of course look elsewhere, but it's still good for the casual reader.

What this book is very good at is getting you interested in the historic importance of the events. All descriptions include references of what led to the battle and what resulted of it, of course both usually more battles, whose names are added to the end of every description; so you can never have only one. You can also look for the name of a war instead of an specific battle, and you'll get a list of its battles; or the name of a country for an extensive list of all-time battles. An index of places and people is of course also included, so navigation is really easy as well as tempting and engaging.

This paperback edition is quite sturdy and the pages won't fall off unless you try really hard.

This book is an excellent reference book, providing a number of quick and easy ways to find out about a given battle. It has rarely failed me, and then in inconsequential battles which I could not find elsewhere. It has generally provided me with the information I needed in a precise and comprehensive form.
But the problem is that at the bottom of each article is a reference to the battle preceding and the battle following. I just naturally have to look them up and then the ones before and after those. Then I get distracted and read the article preceding or following the one I had sought and go off following those battles and wars. Thus I spend half and hour to two hours when I just wanted to find one bit of information. It is delightful to do so, but the book is a very effective time eater.

This highly elastic steam entering alternately at each end of the cylinder, will drive the piston backwards and forwards notwithstanding the pressure of the atmosphere; and no condenser being used, the steam escapes through a tube called a waste-pipe. It is easy to conceive that the greater the elasticity of the steam, the greater is the chance of the boiler bursting; but the cheapness of these engines, owing to the simplicity of their construction, and the convenience of occupying a comparatively small space, makes them still occasionally adopted. The additional quantity of fuel required to bring the water to so high a temperature, and the total loss of the steam, would, I should have thought, more than have counterbalanced the advantage of cheapness in the original cost of the engine. Michael Austin (Ph.D., University of California at Santa Barbara) is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Newman University. He was previously Dean of Graduate Studies at Shepherd University, where he taught composition, world literature, and British literature. In addition to Reading the World, he is the author of A Voice in the Wilderness: Conversations with Terry Tempest Williams.

A great textbook for college students!

I have taught two college-level writing courses with this book, and I continue to be impressed with the scope of its readings. Unlike every other "great-ideas" reader that I have ever seen, READING THE WORLD actually reads, well, the world. It includes many of the traditional Western authors that are common in such collections (Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Martin Luther Francis Bacon, Rousseau, Hobbes, Martin Luther King, etc.), but it adds to the mix a VERY generous assortment of classical non-Western thinkers as well (Sun-Tzu, Mencius, Shotoku, Kenyatta, Gotama, Al-Ghazali, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and many more). I am glad that someone believes--and that some major textbook publishers are beginning to see--that "diversity" in education means a lot more than just the social divisions of American in the 20th and 21st century. There is a very big world out there waiting to be read, and READING THE WORLD is a pretty good place to start.

Great Essays! Even After Class is Over is a Great Purchase!

Even after dropping the class this book is becoming a personal favorite it challenges my mind, my old fashioned ideas into new ones and forces me to "dust off" my critical thinking skills to understand what wonderful essays it presents to me! hopefully it will challenge you as much it has challenged me! give it 4 stars because I haven't finished reading it yet!

If you're teaching Academic Writing and Critical Thinking this is the book for you!

I use this as the primary textbook in my Academic Writing and Critical Thinking class in an international BA program at a college in Brussels. My students, who come from all over the globe, absolutely love this book! Many of them write in their class evaluations that the readings were very interesting and several students have said they even took the book home over the holidays so their parents could read it. It rarely appears at our college's 'used book sales'. The authors of the essays come from all historic eras and all regions of the globe. They represent both genders and many nationalities. Because Michael Austin provides a writing guide at the end of the section (thesis, summary, using quotations, avoiding fallacies, introductions, conclusions....) there is no need for any additional writing handbook. Honestly, I cannot recommend this book too highly.

About the Author
Isabella Lilias Trotter (1853–1928) was an artist and a Christian missionary for over 38 years to the Muslims of Algeria. She wrote several books illustrated by herself, including Parables of the Cross, Parables of the Christ Life, and a book for Sufi Muslims The Way of the Sevenfold Secret. First published in a periodical, and later as a booklet, "Focussed" inspired Helen Lemmel to write of the now famous hymn "The Heavenly Vision" (often referred to by the first line of its refrain, "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus").

A small book with a big message...

This is a wonderful book - short but really full with wonderful analogies regarding nature and the Christan life. It requires careful reading but it is worth the effort to hear the author's heart as she weaves her observations of nature with powerful spiritual truth. She reinforces the need for all Christians to "die so that we may live" and exalts Christ to the highest place... I really loved this book!

FYI: If you are looking for a book that contains colorful and very beautiful reproductions of L. Trotter's art, this really is not the book you are looking for...this books contains some of her sketches but they are basically there to reinforce her message and not for their own sake... If her art is what you are looking for, "A Blossom in the Desert" compiled and edited by Miriam Huffman Rockness is a beautiful book - Blossom in the Desert: Reflections of Faith in the Art and Writings of Lilias Trotter

Upper Dolpo | A beautiful portrayal of one of the Nepal Himalaya's most remote regions!

A wonderful book of photos and text whether you are going to Nepal to trek in Upper Dolpo or an armchair Himalayan traveler! Leo's wonderful photos of the region and Dolpo-pa (local people) really bring remote Dolpo, a remote border region of Nepal and Tibet, to life. The commentary from Peter Matthiessen's "The Snow Leopard" adds further depth to the book; a virtual trip through one of Nepal's most far-flung regions.

I was privileged to lead Leo Montejo on his Dolpo trek with Kamzang Journeys through this special region of high lakes and passes, remote villages, welcoming Dolpo inhabitants, snow leopards, blue sheep and Tibetan Buddhist chortens and monasteries. One of the Himalaya's hidden 'beyuls', or sacred sanctuaries, that most people will never be able to visit because of the challenges of getting there.

This is a book to keep on your coffee table for a long time!

The 'Snow Leopard' through the eyes of a camera

I was fortunate enough to be on the trek with Leo when he retraced George Schaller and Peter Matthiessen's journey through Upper Dolpo in Nepal. Leo's book is a testament to the meticulous detail and energy that he exhibited throughout the trek in searching for what he felt Schaller and Matthiessen would have seen and experienced during their trip back in September of 1973.
Leo's pictures work wonderfully to bring to life the words of Schaller and Matthiesson, giving the reader a real sense of understanding of what the region is like and how difficult it must have been for those two men back in the early 70's when they didn't have the comforts that Leo and his fellow travellers had.
Anyone who has read the 'Snow Leopard' or who has trekked or dreamed of trekking this region would love this book.

Easy Read with good advice

I read a lot of books on leadership, and even though most of them are informative, some of them are heavy and take time to study. I loved how the author put five basic principles in a parable which makes for an easy read and the principles are doable in business life and in personal life. This is a great book to have when you have a few minutes to spare and you would like to read something fun and applicable to life.

This book is true to its title~ The authors truly seek the heart of wisdom by skillfully blending Buddhist teachings on insight meditation practice with conventional knowledge, without loosing authenticity. The book is extremely informative and instructive for beginners. For those who are attracted to this practice, but still are not convinced enough to actually sit and accept this practice ( looking for rationale), this book is very convincing through its highly eloquent, balanced, pragmatic, and wise voice... And if you are already practicing then this book further motivates you to work through various hindrances and stick to this practice. How I see it, anyone with an open and receptive heart will absorb the wisdom of the words here and be encouraged to develop and expand their own practice.

Helpful understanding of the hows and whys of meditation

I love the simple and direct understanding the authors impart as to how to begin Vipassana, the core elements and components. This seems like a training manual, for those of us who cannot attend a training seminar. I really appreciate the deepening of my understanding in just the first few pages. Mindfulness has made a huge difference in the way I see m own life and how i work with clients in psychotherapy. I highly recommend this bok, and anything by Jack Kornfield.

Obedience Training with an e-collar

I had a dog that was uncontrollable. I did some reading and talked to some people and they all said an e-collar was the way to go. Being new at training, I was afraid I would hurt my dog due to my inexperience. I wanted to train her, not punish her. I got this book and it was perfect.

The book is written in tutorial fashion with easy, short lessons. It starts at the beginning - how to determine the right setting to use on the collar, and goes step by step on training your dog and using the collar effectively. The book concludes with other situations where you can use the collar such as unwanted jumping, digging, chasing, etc. I am confident that I have a well-trained companion because of Pat's book.

If you want to use an e-collar for traning, this book is worth the small investment you'll make.

Amazing step by step guide! No detail is left out!

I'd like to note that I had no dog training experience of any kind before I bought my two Siberian huskies just over a year ago. Stubborn breed if you are not familiar with them. Almost every book out there will say u cannot train this breed to walk off leash and expect them to listen.... they are flat wrong!
My dogs have been trained the first year without the use of any classes books or e-collars. They behave wonderfully in the house and yard however at the park, I found it extremely difficult to keep their attention form other ppl or dogs, which was expected. I purchased two e-collars ( dogtra ncp 1902). Just after a week of use, both of my huskies walk from our house a 1/2 mile without a leash and we are all able to enjoy the park without worrying about them chasing other animals ( unless I say it's okay). Absolutely amazing book and devices!

I will say if u don't bother to do your research and use the book as instructed then u will most likely fail. I did modify commands and cut out certain aspects as I'm not training either of my huskies to retrieve yet. I have them heeling wonderfully and coming to me and my wife on a single call command, we rarely have to use the stimulation on the collars ( mostly the vibrate mode) if the dogs do get a little awnry we give a quick "nic" and they quickly return to us.

Bottom line amazing book even if u don't use every section of it. The chapters are broken down very well wih a review page at the end of each section which highlights all the key points

Please do as the book instructs. You may think your dog knows how to sit and come, which mine did, but if you skip steps you can confuse your dog and get undesirable results ! So please don't!!! My dogs knew how to get a beer from the fridge, but i still retrained them as if they were just a puppy, using the collar to help stimulate and get better results.

I was worried that they may have negative reactions to either me or my wife for using the collars but they actually seem more energetic and excited when I pull them out. It clearly seems to them that some sort of play time is coming!

To correct a problem I was having with my young male that needs more control in his life for obedience.

My trainer told me to get this book for the troubles I am having with my boy. I like the book and his idea of how the collar works is different from the other books I have read. My dogs are collar conditioned, therefore I am having to adjust the training some what from his start. I am seeing a difference with my boy. He is not shutting down as he would at times with the other method of collar training.

WoundHealer best of the sword boods

I remember reading WoundHealer years ago - it was a terrific read, I thought it was the best of the Sword books. It could easily stand on its own as a movie (not kidding - and I would definitely pay to see it).

I was a fan of the entire series but WoundHealer was the one that really had a magical feeling to it - in fact, I think I'll read it again after I finish Ardneh's Sword - which I just started :) !!
